I think I love Beethovens music because its so easy to understand. There's a depth of feeling that resonates with the human condition. And its all the more powerful when you take into account his deafness and the intense pressure that he was under.

We owe much to Beethoven. He is the "father" of the modern public concert. Since the 1950s, rock music has been based on his works.     
He was a great composer and a marvelous innovator.

Just consider.... Bach invented jazz before it was called that. If you don't believe me, listen to his harmonies - He was truly ahead of his time. As far as I know he improvised it all at the keyboard, in front of an audience, then went home and wrote it down!

I had a CD, which I somehow managed to lose, with Rachmaninov's Symphony #2 followed by the Piano Concerto #2.  Two absolutely exquisite pieces of music.
