Black Screen
« on: October 30, 2009, 02:28:46 PM »
I installed PCLinuxOS to my daughter's Toshiba Satellite A135 laptop about a week ago. I got an error message with 2009.2 so I used 2009.1 and updated it right after installation. Everything was configured correctly (I thought) but now she has called and said that her screen goes dark and the only way to solve it is to turn the computer off and restart it. The specs say "IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator 950" for the graphics card (probably no help.)

It's hard to diagnose as she lives an hour away, but maybe if I had some ideas of possibilities, I might be able to help her out. She has registered for this forum, but isn't on the internet very much, so that's a problem as well.

Thanks!       :D

I did not say it goes dark.  I said it goes a funky smoky-gray color, like it's having a video card malfunction when in tries to darken the screen while playing a DVD.  I still have it monkey-rigged by putting the screen saver on high priority and setting the wait time longer than the longest DVD I own (about 3.75 hours), but I'm still trying to find a permanent fix.  Or a better screen saver.

I have this same problem.
Left my Toshiba running overnight and now can't get the screen to wakeup. Backup process that I set in motion is still running, so I don't want to interrupt it by shutting down?

Right. When you do get it shut down and restarted, you might try disabling your screensaver. That's how my daughter solved it.

In fact, I think you'll find that by installing PCLinuxOs 2010 it might fix the problem.
I have just upgraded and a couple of times I have left my laptop downloading. When I came back to it the screen was blacked out but responded when I moved the mouse.
I'd say problem solved?
