Googleearth 5.0 vs GE 5.1
« on: October 24, 2009, 08:02:39 AM »
Good day,

Currently I'm running GE 5.0 which performs well, but it's UGLY, the fonts, that is.
GE 5.1 is at least a lot more polished, but then renders unusable because
several layers (i.e. streetview, places, etc) are thoroughly misplaced; +/- 50 km SW.
And that misplacement varies from country to country.

I'd very much appreciate it when somebody could verify this.

Downloads: Googleearth 5.0: http://download.cnet.com/google-earth/
                  Googleearth 5.1: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Home-Education/Google-Earth.shtml (amongst others)

Installing as well as uninstalling is a breeze: make GE executable (chmod a+x GoogleEartLinux.bin)
and then execute from within the working directory ./GoogleEartLinux.bin
Uninstalling is done by simply clicking 'uninstall' in ~/home/whoever/Google-Earth.
Keep in mind that GE is a static app, so none of these actions will affect your system.

  Thanks!, cheers, Hoos.

hoos, I just checked 5.1 and you're absolutely right. The displayed places are off, although double-clicking them zoom in to the correct area.

The 5.0 link only gave me the option to install the windbloze version, so I didn't check that version. I guess the fonts could be adjusted in the config file, but why does the user have to do it manually?

Not very Goole-like - what were they thinking?  ???

Just holler if there's any more that should be checked.  :D

Torsten!

Hopefully this link works: http://download.chip.eu/nl/download_nl_810755.html
In Dutch, but you'll grab the link ;-)
Actually the're not many links left that provide 5.0.

 Thanks!, Hoos.

Right again, hoos. The fonts are not usable. I also couldn't change them with the instructions Tex gave. No other options found, either.

Very strange...  ???

Torsten,

As Tex mentioned somehwhere the fonts are hard coded; indeed, nothing can be done about that.
I was just wondering if a whizzkid around here would be able to do something about the layer misplacements;
probably not, hardcoded as everything seems to be.
Then the question arises is Google actually aware of this issue?

mmm........ ??? ??? ???

Well, I found this "lively" discussion, but the qtconfig thing didn't solve it for me:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/earth/thread?tid=656ef9a98bc427dd&hl=en

By the way, it seems the placements are only off for the places used with the GE4 version. After deleting myplaces.kml and setting new ones, everything is okay. Of course it's annoying depending on what marks you want to keep...

Torsten

EDIT: Back to 5.1, and the placements are WAY off (I currently live in Haan, close to Dusseldorf). Put a home marker, installed 5.1, fired it up and the marker shows up near the border to Holland. A double click zooms in correctly (what I wrote above). A marker for where my parents live in Rhode Island was showing in the water just off Block Island!
