Cannot Set Anything But GIMP in Firefox to read PDF Files
« on: October 23, 2009, 09:35:23 PM »
After a recent update, I find that I have no options other than GIMP for opening PDF files other than to save them, at which point I can then open with Kpdf.

I checked another computer that I have not updated, and it still gives me the option of using MozPlugger to open PDF files on line (in fact it was set there by default), but I cannot find any way to access either Kpdf or MozPlugger under "other" when I go to Edit>preferences>applications>pdf in Firefox.

MozPlugger is still installed as is Kpdf.

How can I reset Firefox to either use MozPlugger like it was doing before or Kpdf on line rather than having to download it to desktop first?

Thank you,

krt

When you say mozplugger is still installed, do you mean that in FF -> Pferences -> Applications you see MozPlugger as the PDF opener?

What version do you see here  ?    8)

I could never figure out the mozplugger business.  It was suggested elsewhere that I use kpdf in /usr/bin/kpdf and that worked great.

Thanks anyway,

I am having a similar, if not the same, problem.  In firefox when downloading email attachments, it doesn't give me the option to open a file, just save.  This isn't the part that bothers me because I have written web apps to do the same thing with attachments so I know that it's my webmail client's fault.  The part that does bother me is when I save PDFs and then double-click the file in the firefox downloads window, it opens it in gimp.  I'm not sure where to go to change that.

I have set KDE to use kpdf, so when I double-click on the file from my desktop, it does use kpdf.

I have also set kpdf as the default application in Firefox -> Edit -> Preferences -> Applications for both "PDF document (application/pdf)" and "PDF document (application/x-octet-stream)".  This setting helps when just clicking regular hyperlinks in firefox to open PDFs and it asks which application to "open with" and it's defaulted to kpdf.  However, it does still show "GIMP (default)" in that drop-down list.

Any suggestions?

What DE are you running?  KDE (3.x or 4.x)? LXDE? Gnome?

We can take it from there...

OK.

Try setting your default application through KDE, first (and, then, if need be, adjust it in Firefox).

On the file type you would like to assign the application to (i.e., some PDF document), right-click and select "Open With >> Other".  From the resulting requestor, locate the application you would like to use, and click on it.  If it works, you can repeat that step, and select "Remember this application..." (see "OpwnWith003.png")

Correct.  I've done that.  And like I said, when I click on a link that takes me to a pdf it opens it in kpdf and when I double-click on a pdf from inside of konqueror it opens in kpdf.  The problem is when I double-click on a pdf file listed in the firefox "downloads" window (Tools -> Downloads), it opens it in gimp.

Have you tried any of the Firefox PDF add ons ?
I have PDF Download installed and you can use the PDF Doenload Options to set the PDF Viewer Program.

 Hope this helps !

In KDE Control Center ...... not on KDE3 so can't give exact instructions ......... you should be able to remove Gimp from the list of apps that are on the list .......  that should prevent Gimp being used.

There may be more than one location in the file associations that require editing ....
