Where to post a "Request for Enhancement"?
« on: October 21, 2009, 12:28:36 PM »
Hi,
I fear I've just lost some very precious data, and that a simple third button on a dialog box could have prevented it. :'(

I'd like to know where to place the suggestion about that third button!

The thing is, in the "Manage Disk Partitions" of PCLinuxOS Administration Centre, there's a "Format" button. First off, there's no "Are you sure?", it just goes right ahead. Well, almost -- there's a dialog saying, "Format: Do you wish to check for bad blocks? [Yes/No]" -- but there is no cancel button! :o

This should not take more than three lines of code to implement, and would make a big difference in drive management safety. It would have for me, and I'd hate for others to face the same situation.

When you open that utility it recommends to backup and asks if you want to continue, then after you hit format it reminds you that you will lost your data, if you agree I don't think there is a need for more annoying Vista like reminders.

Oh, I'm definitely not asking for Vista-like reminders. But, the difference between [Yes/No] and [Yes/No/Cancel] is surely not all that annoying, but could make a helluva difference.

And yes, I'm painfully aware that I screwed up after passing those warnings. There's really no need to take that tone. No offense taken. :) English is not my first language either.

Please excuse the tone, is not my intention to sound aggressive or something, English is not my first language (as you may notice) and many times I don't get the fine detail.

If you choose "Yes," the formatting will proceed. If you choose "No," it will be canceled. That is, in the case you are describing here, the option "No" is the same as the option "Cancel."

Alas, I'm writing to tell you it's not. :'(

As you can read here, there was 'something' going on with the disks -- even after rebooting.

If that's the intention, the wording needs to be adjusted (and/or the actual functionality reviewed). The way it reads, you'll think clicking "no" was still for formatting, but only without checks.

As far as I know the 'bad blocks' message only appears in the advanced options, I have not got a RAID to play with, although I thought there was just a mount option available...

Actually Neal, in this case it will continue to format but it will not check for bad blocks is all. If you choose "NO" at this juncture it will indeed format without further adieu.

Well, it's been quite a while since I clicked "No."

Ok, to get back on track, where do I go to request this changed for the next release?

Every graphical GPL application has a "Help -> About" or "About" menu option giving contact details for the author.

However, you might well want to reconsider your relationship with your computer. You don't have to do what it says. It has to do what you say. If you were offered two options both of which were going to destroy your data, why did you select one of them? I'd have found a different way to shut the application down, even if it meant pulling the plug out (which, of course should never be necessary and should be avoided as it damages data itself). If you didn't know any other way why didn't you just reboot?

Next time remember who's in charge.

What, you never made a mistake? Again, I am painfully aware that I screwed up, and there's really no need to take that tone. Hindsight is always 20/20, as the saying goes. And trust me, I've been losing sleep and mentally kicking myself in the shin and other places ever since. Such a stupid mistake, if I could only have gone 7 seconds back in time ... but such thoughts are useless now.

I'm sorry you think I'm taking a tone, I'm just trying to point out you have more choices than those a program presents to you. You seemed to be suggesting the problem happened because you didn't have the right options.

In fact, I've just read your other thread and if you pulled the power instead of clicking the buttons, then formatting won't have happened. Some disc corruption might have occurred and I would normally suggest running fsck (from the livecd with the partitions unmounted), but I don't know enough about RAID to know whether that's the right tool. I don't know what the discs were doing when you rebooted but it shouldn't have been formatting. I think it's too early to assume you've lost your data, especially as you had a copy on each disc, and only one disc was being written from the other one. It's more likely the system was rewriting files which had become inaccessible because of the corruption caused by pulling the plug than anything else.

So don't panic. Your data is probably still there. You just need a RAID expert to tell you how to access it.

I have already told you how to find out who to contact to request a third button. It is up to the author to decide whether that would help or not, so what I or anyone else think doesn't matter.
