Thanks for all that pcorazao, greatly appreciated.

I'll do what I can and get back to you but some of the items require an internet connection from within PCLOS and that is the problem.

If I recall correctly, rtl8180 wasn't showing in Synaptic so hopefully your suggestions will find and eliminate it once and for all.

The other driver, rtl8187se, is installed but as I mentioned that rtl8180 seems to be ruling the roost.

Will boot into PCLos shortly and report back here when done.

If you can get the internet working off the live CD, and you need the internet connection to do some setup, it might be worth your while to boot the live CD remove the bad driver, then setup the internet with the working one and install and reboot.

assuming you don't have too much invested in your install

OK then.... Got back into PCLos and started down the track of doing things as mentioned. ( Very helpful pcorazao by the way, gave me some hope at least ~ but I'm back in Windows 7 replying to this I'm afraid.)

First todo:
lsmod
rtl8180

So OK... Todo:
rmmod rtl8180

Then check the conf. files so....:
less /etc/modprobe.conf
......
alias wlan0 rtl8180
alias eth0 r8169
......
alias eth1395 ndiswrapper

less /etc/modprobe.preload >>>>> nothing here re rtl*

less /etc/rc.local   >>>>> nothing here re rtl*

Did:
vim /etc/modprobe.conf and deleted both.

Then did the PCC stuff but only got
"Problems occured during the network connectivity test.

This can be caused by invalid network configuration, or problems with your modem or router.

You might want to relaunch the configuration to verify the connection settings"

for the eth0 and no joy whatsoever with ndiswrapper for the wireless card ~ kept getting something like " no card found for this driver" no matter which one I tried.

In PCC I got to see both cards - this is what it says about the wireless:
RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller

So my next step is to try your LiveCD idea but I need to get some work done first.

And as for your <quote>assuming you don't have too much invested in your install</quote> yeah, can't do much without getting onto the internet reliably.
On my old IBM Thinkpad PIII I'm getting some stuff done ( QCad only crashes twice a week and OpenOffice freezes only once a week ) but I need to fire up some more graphic intensive programs on this Laptop before I can move on. ( Need to use SmartCAM V16 ~ Runs on wine OK on the R30 but crashes when rendering is required ~ need to get WinDNC up and running and when BricsCAD get their act together I need to update that as well.)

Getting so that the boss is starting to look at me funny and I'm not happy about considering Windows for the job.

Anyway, I'll get back here after I've tried the LiveCD.

ok Lets find out what is the offical version of the laptop your using Toshiba Satellite L500D-STXXXX ?

These are the models to pick from:

L500D-ST2531
L500D-ST2532
L500D-ST2543
L500D-ST5501
L500D-ST5506
L500D-ST55X1
L500D-ST5600

Try to identify which one is yours, it will help to make sure we get the right driver going.

The good news is that it is a RealTek, 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN device.

I have worked with Broadcom and Ralink drivers in the past, using both linux and ndiswrapper.  Galaxar posted dkms-rtl8187se i am assuming the ndiswrapper windows xp RealTek driver is no good hence the linux driver and we should focus on finding a linux driver for your device, and we know its on the LiveCD and it works.

So when you have time, boot the liveCD, and get the wireless working like you did before.  then take note of of which module its using vi lsmod

also open pcc and go into hardware and note the "Module" its using when the wireless is working.  It would be helpful if you copy and paste that config info to the form before the install and reboot.  Also note the Ethernet Card.

Then after the reboot, take note of the Wireless and Ethernet card again and post. Lets try to figure out what changed.

I am looking for the output similar to this from pcc-hardware:

Identification
Vendor: ‎Cisco-Linksys LLC

Description: ‎Linksys RangePlus Wireless Network USB Adapter

Media class: ‎

Connection
Bus: ‎USB

Bus PCI #: ‎1

PCI device #: ‎14

Vendor ID: ‎0x1737

Device ID: ‎0x0078

Sub vendor ID: ‎0x0000

Sub device ID: ‎0x0000

Misc
Module: rt3720sta

Once we know what works, we can square off this driver in the config files so it loads correctly.

Right. Finally get to give this some more time.

Booted from LiveCD and got both LAN and WLAN running fine so hope the info I got while there is of assistance.

For the LAN from within PCC ~ Hardware

Identification
Vendor: ‎Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
Description: ‎RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller
Media class: ‎Ethernet controller
Connection
Bus: ‎PCI
PCI domain: ‎0
Bus PCI #: ‎20
PCI device #: ‎0
PCI function #: ‎0
Vendor ID: ‎0x10ec
Device ID: ‎0x8136
Sub vendor ID: ‎0x1179
Sub device ID: ‎0xff00
Misc
Module: ‎r8169

And the same for WLAN:

Identification
Vendor: ‎Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
Description: ‎RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller
Media class: ‎Network controller
Connection
Bus: ‎PCI
PCI domain: ‎0
Bus PCI #: ‎14
PCI device #: ‎0
PCI function #: ‎0
Vendor ID: ‎0x10ec
Device ID: ‎0x8199
Sub vendor ID: ‎0x10ec
Sub device ID: ‎0x8182
Misc
Module: ‎r8180

And then there's:
[root@localhost win_c]# lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
................................
r8180                 130288  0
................................
r8169                  26692  0

And that I believe leaves only one piece of info to get.
Is there any way I can get the ST****** number from the system itself without having to dig out the receipts for this laptop?
Mind I'm within Windows 7 at present but the hardware information doesn't show that piece if info ~ everything but. It's proberly staring me in the face but right now I'm clueless as to how to find it from within the system.

Further to the above, I discovered that it appears that PCC doesn't use the ndiswrapper ~ it just goes straight to the NIC. At least that is the impression I got from the Hardware Config dialogue.

So, hope you are still watching and am able to assist.

TIA.

Great the wireless NIC is using a Linux driver  ‎r8180
I don't need to know the ST of your Laptop if that driver r8180 is working out fine for you.

r8169 is a linux driver for your NIC lan line

Now show me what your config looks like from your install.
I just want to make sure the same drivers are still present.

Basically, the hardware display within PCC are identical.

I've included the other stuff in case it helps.

I've mucked around with Linux for a while now but this has got me stompted as I'm not sure where to start after seeing the same in both the LiveCD > PCC > Hardware ( Which works fine ) and the HDD install ( Which of course is not working both the lan and wlan connection.)

Keeping a watch out and again, thanks heaps for hanging in there.

Your new config shows ‎rtl8180 which may or may not be the same as ‎r8180.

rtl8180 is RealTek, but there might be a legacy r8180 version that works for your device and the rtl8180 is loading before the r8180 and causes your NIC not to register.

so let review the diretory:
/lib/modules/2.6.27.31.tex5/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/

Note: There kernal version maybe different for you.

Do a ls and see if you see a r8180.ko or r8180.ko.gz, also check to see if there is a rtl8180 version.

I am hoping you see both, if you do then do a
rmmod rtl8180
rmmod r8180
modprobe r8180

and see if you get a wireless connection
iwconfig

if you do see a wireless network conection become available after you modprobe r8180 then use pcc manage it.

we are focusing on r8180 because we know it work on the liveCD but..

[root@SNAPAFUNTOSHIBA snapafun]# modprobe rtl8187se
FATAL: Module rtl8187se not found.

If you got this then the rtl8187se is not installed, can you re-install  package: dkms-rtl8187se

I realize this must be at the moment imposible because we don't have any working internet connections.

You can download the windows XP driver for RTL8187SE rev 22 from here:

http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=driverfile&dno=6922&i=1

some distros have had luck with this driver and ndiswrapper

download and extract the zip file

cd (090331)RTL8187SE_WindowsLogoDriver_5_6.9095.0324.2009_ISS_1.01.0086(OEM Ready)\RTL8187SE\WinXP2K

ndiswrapper -i net8187se.inf

ndiswrapper -l
hopefully you see your device id

modprobe ndiswrapper

then use pcc to manage the connection.

if it dose not work then

ndiswrapper -r net8187se.inf

modprobe ndiswrapper

you might have to use a thumb stick to transfer the zip file, since the internet connection are not working at the moment.

Update.

Haven't got there yet but just in case you spot something, here's where I've got to.

[root@SNAPAFUNTOSHIBA wireless]# pwd
/lib/modules/2.6.26.8.tex3/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
[root@SNAPAFUNTOSHIBA wireless]# ls
*************
r8180.ko.gz
.....
rt2870sta.ko.gz
rndis_wlan.ko.gz
.....
rtl8180.ko.gz
RTL8185/     [ This one is a folder ~ empty]
rtl8187.ko.gz
*****************

The above is some of the files within this folder.

Here's what happened when following your instructions. ( Thanks by the way.)

[root@SNAPAFUNTOSHIBA]# rmmod rtl8180
[root@SNAPAFUNTOSHIBA]# rmmod rtl8187
ERROR: Module rtl8187 does not exist in /proc/modules

Say what? It's listed as you can see.

[root@SNAPAFUNTOSHIBA wireless]# modprobe rtl8180
[root@SNAPAFUNTOSHIBA wireless]# lwconfig
bash: lwconfig: command not found

Oh dear ~ No lwconfig  ???

Using PCC I removed the eth0 card that was the only one showing so as to start afresh.

Using the "Set up a new ..." dialogue I started by selecting 'Wireless' but the next screen
only offerred the RTL8187SE controller.

So I cancelled out of that and went down the hardware route.

Under 'Ethernet Card I got to see:

RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller
and
RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller.

Here's to full readout of the wireless card:

Identification
Vendor: ‎Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
Description: ‎RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller
Media class: ‎Network controller
Connection
Bus: ‎PCI
PCI domain: ‎0
Bus PCI #: ‎14
PCI device #: ‎0
PCI function #: ‎0
Vendor ID: ‎0x10ec
Device ID: ‎0x8199
Sub vendor ID: ‎0x10ec
Sub device ID: ‎0x8182
Misc
Module: ‎rtl8180

OK, so hopefully the confusion in names will be over ruled by the RTL8180 Module.

To continue ---

> Run Config tool
> Wireless (Wi-Fi)
> [Radio Button] "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller
Unable to find network interface for selected device. (using rtl8180 driver)
> OK
> Next
Back to the same ' Unable...' again.

So now to try the ndiswrapper way. ( Nice to be a tri booting machine for now )

Forgot where I put the driver download so back to Win7 for now to go get it again.

ok Great the r8180.ko.gz  driver is the one you need to load, thats the one that worked on the live cd.

Forget that rtl8180 its not working

do a

rmmod rtl8180 //remove the bad driver

Then load r8180 driver

modprobe r8180 //load the working driver.

iwconfig

Good Luck, I think you almost have it.
