No internet connection after reboot

I have a Toshiba L500D Satellite booting Vista, Win7 and PCLinuxOS 2009.2

1. Tested this system with LiveCD first and got working both Lan and WLan

2. Installed from LiveCD and after reboot could only get Lan

3. Updated everything using PASS

4. Upon reboot ~ neither Lan nor WLan will connect.

Under pcc/hardware/wireless and running config tool I get:

1. Network Interface ~ Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL 8187SE Wireless LAN Controller

2. Then clicking on 'Next' I get "Unable to find network interface for selected device (using rtl8180 driver ).

3. I cannot proceed past this though checking Synaptic Installed I see "ndiswrapper-net8185" and the search did not turn up anything else.

Again under pcc/hardware/wired and running config tool I get:

1. Ethernet ~ eth0: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller

2. On clicking 'Next' I select "manual Configuration"

3. I fill in the fields as per my Windows setups but leave the Host Name blank for now.

4. I allow Users to manage connection and select 'Start the connection at boot'

5. I select "Yes" to start the connection now

6. After "Please wait" I get:
            "Problems occured during the network connectivity test."

            "This can be caused by invalid network configuration, or problems with your modem or router"

            "You might want to relaunch the configuration to verify the connection settings."

7. Needless to say I have tried other settings including Automatic Configuration, all arriving at the same message.

So, right now I'm unable to get PCLos onto the internet, I appear to be fully updated for now, the drivers mentioned in the Config tool do not appear to be the driver installed ex-synaptic and of course my only means of getting this here is by using my old faithful Desktop ( also running PCLos ) while viewing messages on the Laptop.

Any suggestions anyone ?

Need more info? Just ask but please be specific in command line syntax to ensure the correct needed info is got. ( I'm able to save printf from commands over to my Windows partition and booting into Windows can then send the info on.)

Hello, Snapafun.
I'm no expert, far from it. And (as you can see on the forum) I'm having my own wifi issues. With those caveats, though, I can offer these few ideas.

A) concentrate on wired connection first, there are fewer issues to worry about and you'll be able to update Synaptic, download patches, do whatever to solve the wifi issues after that.

2)  Go to the "Configure Your Computer" icon, the PCLOS circle with wrench and screwdriver. Find the Network & Internet department. Upper right: Set up a new interface. Clicke Wired (Ethernet) and follow the prompts to set up a "new" connection. You can then delete any non-working "connections". And don't forget to call your new connection "Atari" like I did, this will solve everything. (That was a joke.) You might even want to create a new user account to do this - that way you know everything is at default values. Maybe??

Lastly) run "lspci" and "lsusb" commands in a terminal and post the results. These are requested by people who know. I cannot interpret them, but they are requested by the folks around here when trying to solve connection issues.

(P.S. I read somewhere around here that when you get to Synaptic you must first click Reload then click Mark All Upgrades then Apply anything Synaptic found. This sets up Synaptic properly to go forth finding the stuph you really want.)

Re: A ~ When I was connected via wired upon the very first reboot I was able to upgrade everything. NB. I'm using the PASS repository for this.

Re: 2) I'm quite familiar with PCC and have been down that path with differing ideas but still no connection, can only get to the message as stated within my first post and things will not progress from there. I've tried Automatic, Manual ( something I've done for some time ), I've turned DNS on and off, I've included a host name and left it blank, I don't think there is anything  or combination I haven't tried. Oh, can't updae/upgrade with synaptic again until the system is back online.

Not sure what use 'lsusb' is and I can see nothing helpful listed there so will hold that back until it makes sense to use.

As to 'lspci' ~ I do get to see both the wireless and wired units ~ viz:
0e:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL 8187SE Wireless LAN Controller (rev 22)
14:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller ( rev 02 )

These are the last two entries for that command ~ I bit puzzling seeing all those 0s. Might be correct though.

Just been through the whole wired setup again and nothing has changed ~ first time I've never been able to connect to the internet with PCLinuxOS.

DeBaas ~ Thanks for the link ~ I don't use ipv6 and until I can actually connect online I'm unable to do the 'at startup" entries.

Got to be something I'm missing or something not getting done first.

Any more suggestions anyone ?

Just before loging off PCLos for Win7 I took a look at "Remove a connection" and discovered two to pick from.

1. wifi (wlan0)
2. eth0: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller

Now.... are these just listing the card entries or are these actual configurations of existing connections ( that have stopped working obviously ) that are blocking attempts to get new connections up and running ?

If I delete them will I be able to restart a new connection within PCC albeit via the Config Tool under the hardware tab ?

Or are they simply something that is listed as hardware recognition ?

you could pcc>network and internet>remove a connection and start back again, i'd remove all connections. and do one at a time, had a similar problem with the same message you got

After i removed the connections and reconfigured i was good to go

Laptops seem to be a bit harder to do than Desktops, from what i understand in what i've read.

As long as your hardware (eth0 and wlan0) are correctly identified and the proper drivers are in place, you could always remove an existing connection and create a new one.

Just for the record, it is not an IPv6 problem, that is secundairy.
Check in a root terminal with the command:

service network restart

if you can get live into your network

Will act as suggested ~ got to be busy right now. Can understand some of needing to do these things, just strange that the livecd worked fine - now nothing.

Right... first bit done OK ~ deleted all connections ~ went for new wired ( eth0 ) connection and it connected immediately.

Wireless still no go but I'm at present upgrading the last weeks stuff before I try again.

One point here before I go looking ~ how do I make sure that these connections stay put across reboots/shutdowns?

Back to the wireless ~ still no joy.

Within Synaptic there is only one RTL driver shown ( installed also ) and that is ndiswrapper-net8185 ~ version 1.0.2pclos2007 ( I'm only using PASS at this point ).

However, under PCC/Hardware/Ethernetcard there are two entries ~ the ethernet appears to be working ok for the Lan connection at present ~ but the " RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller" is shown as using module rtl8180

So is there a way of uninstalling the rtl8180 module and/or upgrading the card with the ( installed ) RTL8185 package ?

My thoughts at this stage is that I must revisit the howto's to find out how to manually use a firmware driver 'cause according to the sourceforge site rtl8180 is supported but the next one up is a rtl8192. Starting to get a little lost here but I'm not giving it away because the livecd had wireless working so there must be a way on the hard drive install.

Any further pointer anyone?

Hey, I have a similar notebook (Toshiba L505D) and the same wireless controller.  I needed to install the "dkms-rtl8187se" to get my wireless working.  Works wonderfully after that.  Hope that helps ya!

Back again.

What with xams and having this old grunty PIII desktop running PCLos OK and my old IBM Thinkpad ( another PIII ) running fine and connecting with the internet without hassles, I've left the Toshiba L500D alone as far as PCLos is concerned but now need to get it up and running again because I find Linux is more reliable when away from home.

So back to this issue.

The last time I was here I mentioned that I succeeded in getting connected via LAN Ok. When I did that I undated everything but upon reboot, no connection at all again.

I've been through the steps above but no luck.

So, do I need to re-install yet again or is there a way I can force this to work.

NB. Galaxar posted re the "dkms-rtl8187se" driver and I believe this is installed but the only option I see when re-doing eth0 is the rtl8080 driver. So I'm hoping that there is some way of doing away with this driver though it does not show up in synaptic so that I might uninstall it.

Any more ideas anyone?

sounds like you have a linux driver that keeps loading the device id and its not working for your wireless card: rtl8180

do a
lsmod

find the exact name of the linux driver that keeps loading. example rtl8180 or rtl8180sa not sure what it will say..

then remove the driver.

rmmod rtl8180

check to make sure the driver is removed from the following files also:

/etc/modprobe.conf

might look like this:
alias wlan0 rtl8180

/etc/modprobe.preload
might look like this:
rtl8180

/etc/rc.local
might look like this:
insmod /lib/modules/KernelVersion/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8180

then setup the the internet connection again using PCC / ndiswrapper follow the wizard and have the connection startup on reboot.

ndiswrapper -l
should show your device loaded and working.

once you have that driver removed

you can use pcc/ndiswrapper xp windows driver or the linux driver: dkms-rtl8187se vi synaptic

modprobe rtl8187se
will install the load the linux driver rtl8187se then use pcc to configure the driver and interface

note if you don't see an interface after you load the linux driver you probably have the wrong driver.
