When you open a chat to someone, under Conversation, there is Media
and there you will find Audio Call / Video Call and Audio/Video Call
they were all grayed out

I have not had an opportunity to try this myself ....... would it work with a Google account -- does Google support voice & video on Linux? .. or is that needed?

I have an account with every IM nearly, but i can't tell all my contacts "hey, i'm on Linux, i can't use a camera on this IM, so switch to something else"
Trust me, that won't bring more people to linux  :-\

It works with all kernels upto .8.tex3,
After that, since neither gspcav1 nor uvcvideo get installed, it no longer sees any V4L2 devices.
even KdeTV seems my WebCam, just not Kopete (which is the only multi-im in Linux which even has WebCam support)

My experience here that "not detecting" a webcam is easily solved by buying a dead cheap other one. Most cam's now work supported by the kernel (some "USB" tricky which I don't know the details about). So here I got the newer kernel and webcam does work. However, just like KDE Kopete lost its glory. It will not let you connect the cam to anyone. (Requests fail and reverse you will never see a "accept" window). The so late arrived webcam fun in Linux seems again over for a while if it comes to multi IM.

@bicol_willem, my webcam is a brand new, really high quality which is built to my Asus monitor. Not even Logitech 9000 came close to the quality i'm getting, so why on earth would i want to buy an external low quality camera? but you are right, it is a shame that linux is getting zero support when it comes to an IM with a video conferencing  :-\

kopete does detect the webcam for me with the -4.tex kernel, however it doesn't work (and never did even with earlier kernels) in practice with MSN contacts, which is where other contacts use it. I tend to use Skype if I need a webcam connection.
PCLinuxOS has no wealthy sponsors and can only survive with your donations! Don't wait it might be too late.

Running PCLOS on Athlon II/250 with 2Gb Ram using ASUS M2N68-AM Plus Mobo with Nvidia GF7600GT graphics, and Samsung NC10 Netbook

@davecs, i've worked with Kopete's MSN and with friends and although we had some connection issues, i did get and transmit camera on the .8.tex3 kernel. It's only since those two dkms's stopped installing, that i was unable to have Kopete even detect a camera on my system.

Same here (webcam detected by Kopete) but it is rather useless since no transmission can be made right now. All we can see at max is ourselves. But for that we have already a reliable device for ages called "mirror"  :D
"Tending to use Skype" is a lack of options at best and the many Yahoo and MSN and, what is left of ICQ users, we likely won't find there. In fact if it comes to IM we have lost the ground Kopete ever won. The gap has widened again while Pidgin has so far never arrived. Sad to see what is so "natural" in Windows seems a nearly impossibility in Linux (again)..

Unfortunately, i couldn't agree more  :-\
It's rather ridicules, that a far superior OS such as Linux, would have such a hard time doing something that has existed with ICQ since 2003... that's 7 years ago now...
