Sorry, old thread but I was just trying to use KIM and noticed that I have exactly the same problem as the OP.  After noticing that one of the dependencies is ImageMagick, I looked in synaptic and found that ImageMagick was not installed. I installed ImageMagic and it now works as it's supposed to. No need for kimono. It worked fine for me in KDE 3xxx so maybe something has changed?  This is the first time I've had to install ImageMagick...
