resolution and nvidia
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:22:18 PM »
First of all, my problem is solved, but I still want to report it.

The resolution I have on my KDE3 is 1440x900 at 60Hz
This is perfect for the display I have

Now, in KDE4, when I went to PCC/hardware/Graphical server, there was no provision for 1440x900 ( except for flat screen, which didn't work out well )

Then I got the brilliant idea to install Nvidia ( yup, i forgot about that for a while   ;D  ), and under
PC/System/configuration/nvidia, I was able to choose 1440x900

Clicking OK changed my desktop to what I wanted....> perfect
Clicking save generated an error that nvidia couldn't make a backup of Xorg, or something to that extend

Now for the test >>>>.reboot>>> and after a full bootup, I was in 1024x786 mode again.
I did this a few times , with same bad result.

Then I forced my computer to reboot in non-gui mode, and I used FXdrake to enter the values I wanted.

I rebooted, et voila, I got a permanent 1440x900  desktop, time and time again

As I said, I just wanted to report this behavor, for those of us who like black magic. that in GUI mode, there is something weird going on  ;D ;D

Starting to like KDE4 more and more

did you open nvidia-config as an administrator or as a user?

as a user....didn't think and don't think it would be necessary to be an admin

If it was necesary to be an admin...a box asking for password should pop up.
Besides , in KDE3 you can change as user afaik

Thanks for popping in

nvidia-config(i.e. nvidia-settings) writes the settings to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and it won't be able to write if it doesn't have the permission to. just make a backup of your conf file before-hand, I think nvidia-config does this automatically, but I'm not sure. after the settings are made click save to X or whatever it says, I don't have Dynamic Twin View enabled or want it enabled, so do not see these options.
Code: [Select]
[troll@trolling ~]$ su
Password: <enter password>
[root@trolling troll]# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.backup-2009-10-13
[root@trolling troll]# nvidia-settings
above is just for reference

This "feature" of nvidia-settings not to have a superuser or root button somewhere should really be reported as a bug. I am in the habit now of changing nvidia-settings menu entry by adding "kdesu" at the beginning of the command line entry everytime I do a new install so I don't have this problem.

just add kdesu to the beginning of the icon or menu entry. I am using gnome so I forgot how kde works. it should prompt for a password. It's not a bug on pclinuxos's part I think the default installation adds the same desktop entry. Maybe a feature request.
