Freeing Up Space In Root (SOLVED)
« on: October 07, 2009, 11:36:27 AM »
 I have a 15 gig root partition that has 13 gigs in it. I have done apt-get clean, cleaned out what temp files that I know of, and used KDirStat, and Bleachbit,to see what hidden files lirk. I did install a lot of apps so I can try out things, but have never gone beyond 6 gig before. Also made sure that I had no hidden ISO or VDI files.
  I wanted to make a remaster and won't be able to until I can clean this up. Would appreciate any suggestions.

  Just realized that when I had been logged in as root, I had decided to do some housekeeping on my large data drive and delete ALOT of data. The only thing I forgot to do was delete everything from the trash bin. There was 8gigs sitting there hiding out waiting for me. Now I have a comfortable 3.5 gigs, and can probably clean that up a little moe. Thought I would share this, should it happen to anyone else.

Hey, thank you Duvid just did that in a 12.6 GB partition and my free space went from 90% to 57%  :-[  I think I have forgotten to do my housekeeping
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

 I had always been told not to login as root. I sometimes just find it easier to sift through my files and change settings when I am in the root account, instead of doing each task as root. In reality this just made it easier for me to forget to empty the trash.

Your suggestion helped me with a slightly different situation.

I have several partitions on each of two hard drives.  On one of those partitions, I installed kde4.  Been running and getting used to it, but kept having a strange occurrence:   If certain partitions were opened and if I copied, pasted or edited files in those opened partitions, my empty desktop Trash Bin would sometimes unexpectedly become populated with numerous folders and files which I hadn't sent there.  Fearful of deleting folders and files I hadn't sent to the Trash Bin, I'd close those partitions and then have to log out and back in, before the Trash Bin would return to it's empty state.

Taking your advise, I again opened those partitions and looked for hidden files.  Sure enough, one partition had a hidden Trash Bin populated with those folders and files which kept finding their way into my desktop Trash Bin.  Once I deleted that folder there's been no recurrence, solving the mystery.  Apparently, I had deleted those folders/files many months ago and when backing up my /home to a separate partition inadvertently copied over a populated Trash Bin as well.
