[solved]Can't install Nero
« on: October 03, 2009, 06:08:41 PM »
Hello

I am wondering how to install Nero. The file I downloaded is called nerolinux-4.0.0.0-x86.rpm

I have no clue how to install a .rpm file. I googled it and found a command to put in Konsole but I don't know how to do it correctly. I'm a Linux newbie.

As a self proclaimed "Linux Newbie" did you know that there are alternatives? K3B works for most people. No real need for Nero.

Why do you need Nero? Billy told ya? ;)
We have K3b or Brasero. Try. Packages installed outside our repos can damage your system, which means you can't come here and complain over PCLinuxOS!

it is very easy, there is a graphical tool to help you but i believe it is easier to do in konsole

open konsole in the same folder you have the rpm, write su

it will ask the root password, enter it

then write rpm -i nerolinux-4.0.0.0-x86.rpm (assuming that it is the exact name of the rpm)

it will do the task, if it can't do it, it will tell you why, usually it is caused because it needs another package(think on it as a .dll)

if successful it could leave a icon in desktop or a entry on kmenu just as you could expect it

please have in mind that nero in linux is not that good as the windows version(well the latest version in windows is not good either)

probably you will find what you need for free in k3b, brasero and other cd/dvd burner apps(k3b is already installed on your system)

"We have K3b or Brasero. Try. Packages installed outside our repos can damage your system"

this is true, but if you really want to have this app, it shouldn't be a problem(theoretically)

K3b is SOO easy to use. Unless you have a specific need for Nero, I can't imagine one.

Thanks for all the responses guys, much appreciated.

I didn't know about K3b, and after a little browsing through my programs I found it.

Now another question, does anyone know how to make a vcd using K3b?

If I can use K3b to put video onto a cd-r, I can throw out nero  :P

Yeah

Now I'm a little confused...

I looked around the program and found 'further actions' and from there i found the option 'New Video CD Project (VCD)'

But I need to choose data cd?

"no packages outside repos, right?"

i know i know

but, if you want a commercial app, eventually this is required and as you and others know, when you know what you are doing or somebody can guide you, all should be ok

about vcd

vcd?

this is the year 2009!  vcd is dead!

devede should help you to do whatever you want, never used k3b but afik you can use it for that(even knowing vcd is dead)

about data cd, no idea, try it on a cd-rw to avoid a waste of cds, practicing you can learn too(and you can practice alot with cd-rw)

I thought VCD was just what it was called when you put video onto a CD and made it work, lol

I'm not the smartest when it comes to things like this lol

The original need to burn video onto CD-R was to watch it on my old Playstation 2 so I could have a bigger screen to watch it on and still have the computer free to use.

I then found out that the PlayStation 2 wouldn't play just any video format and you had to have the DVD format. Somehow or another I stumbled across a few pages somewhere in the deep dark depths of the internet and heard that if you did it correctly you could watch VCD on the PS2. After that I read that that was a load of crap and there was no possible way to watch a movie on a cd-r in the PS2.

So now I guess I can't do anything else, so I'll mark this as solved

Thanks for the help everyone, it's much appreciated.

"I thought VCD was just what it was called when you put video onto a CD and made it work, lol"

last time i used a playstation 2 it couldn't read a vcd but not sure if it was the vcd or what

you can put a video into a cd and open it on a recent dvd player with avi/xvid/divx/mp4 capabilities but that doesn't convert the video to vcd format, the files in a vcd must be mpeg in a certain resolution(very low, cell phone resolution) prepared with a specific folder structure to be called vcd(this is why i say it is dead)

you can't watch cd-rw or dvd-rw content on a playstation 2, the system is designed to do this(avoid pirated games/copied dvds, early days of dvd burners) only cd-r or dvd-r(not sure if dvd+r)

if you still want to do what you mentioned on the first place, nero or k3b will help you but thinking on a dvd video(forget vcd)

i believe that the task is easier to do with devede(you can find it on synaptic if not comes pre-installed)

have in mind that the conversion process from the original format into a dvd format(so you can watch it on the ps2) will take some time, depends on how fast is your cpu, from 2 to 3 hours, maybe less if you have multicore cpu

in this case it is not necessary to use nero but it could help you in the task but i believe that k3b will be the same task without installing the rpm with nero

the rpm you downloaded is basically a zip file with all the required files and folders to add this app to your system, it is different to a .exe or a .bin app but does the same

the problem we mentioned about using app outside synaptic(repos) is that the app you downloaded could be a security risk or could do some damage to your system(mess up some apps or files/folders) but since it is a known app and you downloaded the file from a trusted site there should be no problem

if you decide to install nero(follow the steps i already mentioned), you can open later synaptic and uninstall it(after you see you don't need it anymore  ;) ), just press the search button and write nero, mark the proper package to remove it, system will do the rest(it is the beauty of rpm)

I don't understand this thread, but it looks like a foreign package?  Anyway if I don't understand it, then I expect it must belong in the advanced users section.  If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.
