click the cashew -> zoom out -> configure plasma and tick "different activity for different desktops" -> click one of the plus signs to zoom back in

each desktop will have its own activity and you can set different wallpapers on each activity as well as have different widgets on different desktops

Likewise... my thanks to you as well, muungwana - this was actually my next KDE4-related question, and you have already answered it... although I still do not understand in the slightest what the KDE team means by "activity" - apparently, their definition may somehow differ greatly from the Oxford dictionary listing for same?  It seems to be a usage of the word that I am not familiar with, and so I find myself encountering some difficulty in grasping their concept.

below url contains different meanings of the word "activity"
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/activity

"activity" in kde4 seem to be mostly related to definition number two. "activities" are primarily meant to be used to break up the desktop to specific tasks. You can have activity1 labeled "work" and only have work related objects on it, another one labeled "play" any have play related objects on it, another one labeled "school" with school related objects only.

you can set up different activities to show up on different virtual desktops(what is asked on this thread). You can, also, on the same virtual desktop change to different activity when doing different tasks, you can change to work activity when doing work,  play activity when you want to play and school activity when you want to do school work.

You can organize your work flow through virtual desktops(and have them all share the same activity) or through kde4 activities(have one virtual desktop and multiple activities) or multiple virtual desktops with multiple activities ..whatever works for you..

Ah.  It seems as though I again do not 'fit' either style - my pattern of usage, regardless of whatever "activity", is to treat all desktops similarly.  I do however wish to have different background images upon each, as such does aid in visual identification - besides; having only one background image quickly becomes rather boring, I find.

In that regard, however, I did have one somewhat-related question:  shall linux (in general) ever gain the ability to display animated desktop backgrounds?  Yes, I do realise that such are generally regarded as being annoying; however, people do ask me that question regardless, and as yet I have no answer to respond with.  Be it an animated .gif, or an actual video file of some sort, or even a URL streaming webcams or pornography or whatever... some do pose this question to me, all the same.  How should I answer?

have you tried to set up an animated image as a background? how did it show up? ..i dont have any so i cant test

you can set up your desktop to use desktop activity and have a video plasmoid on your desktop. As for having a video as a background, i dont know but it shouldnt hard. You can go and open a feature request on kde bug tracker and see what they will say about it

My thanks to you again, muungwana.  No, I've not actually attempted such yet, as I hold no real interest towards it - I was merely curious, regarding how to respond appropriately to that particular question.

Slideshows are possible with pics at 10sec intervals minimum, but what a resource hog a full screen video as a wallpaper would be .....  then try to have one on each desktop   :D :D :D

Perhaps one of the mods can make this a sticky.  I know this very question has been asked and answered so many so many times before. Perhaps making it a sticky would make it easier to find. :)

I did have one somewhat-related question:  shall linux (in general) ever gain the ability to display animated desktop backgrounds?

vc,

The e17 desktop already has this capability.
