Boot issue....
« on: September 28, 2009, 03:59:34 PM »
Issue booting up, I was wondering what I can do to make it a faster load... It literally takes about 5 minutes from power on, to login. I am running this on a  Acer Aspire 5100 laptop,  2.2gb Turion mk-38, and have 2.5 gb RAM, 120gb HD.  As well, wondering what I can do to get my built in Webcam working..... Outside of these things, this OS is INCREDIBLE!!!!

Which part of the boot sequence is causing the delay?  Press 'esc' to get the 'verbose' option and watch which element(s) are taking the time.  I have rarely seen anything near 5 mins for boot - even with live CD.

(My experience is that long delays are usually due to 'udev', and they CAN be very long.)

Its when it gets to the part in verbose that the script ends with the last word...login. Screen goes black, with the exception of a blinking cursor in top left corner, then after a little while, totally black, for a few minutes, and then it flickers a few times, and ding, login screen...

Ah!! This is where you need someone with more 'knowhow' than me.  Hopefully there will be another suggestion forthcoming, but in the meanwhile I'd be checking whether the video driver selection is right. You haven't listed what video system is on board - that might be helpful. (Search the forums for any problems with your particular version)

Something else you could try, and post the result, is what happens when you do a LiveCD boot - does it still crawl at the same place?

Good luck!

Video card specs please.....probably need a proprietary driver installed.
Why?
