Synaptic error's
« on: September 09, 2009, 09:05:27 PM »
My bro-in-law is trying to install kde4.  Im walking him through the process and he keeps coming up with these error's every single time we try to get kde4

E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

E: Unable to correct dependencies

E: Cannot read vendors.list file

Not exactly sure whats going on.  We tried like 5 diff repo's, did a reboot and he is fully updated.  I had not 1 problem when I changed over to kde4 and havent had 1 problem at all after the change.  Any ideas of whats going on with his.  Also when he clicks on the task-kde4 and marks for install the minimal one turns red.

Maybe he has some packages installed which are not compatible with KDE4. I know my own AutoUpgrade is one of those, but there may well be others.

Why don't you partition and install new, then upgrade. Works like a champ and your old install is still there if you have any problems. As things get more stable/ compatible, simply move all your important files and remove the old version. I did this a couple weeks ago and have gone back only twice to the old kde3

To upgrade to kde4, after changing the repo from kde to kde4, you must NOT click Mark All Upgrades else you get the error you reported. You must install the package "task-kde4".
PCLinuxOS has no wealthy sponsors and can only survive with your donations! Don't wait it might be too late.

Thats the problem, we arent clicking mark all upgrades, just click install the task-kde4 then apply.  We get the same errors every single time

I had exectly the same problem too. I sorted it by installing the minimal package first and then ran the task-kde4 again after that . Seemed to work ok after that. Not quite sure why I had the problems though.
