rebooted, got a screen telling me CMOS checksum error, default loaded, press F1 to continue.

Sounds like it is time to check the voltage on your CMOS battery on the motherboard! (should be between 3volt and 3.2 volt)

Sounds like a good idea, let me just get out the waders, rubber gloves, hammer, and crowbar.  Did I mention I don't go into my machine much, where did I put the safety glasses, and yes I'll need the fire extinguisher  in case I forget to unplug and set myself on fire (again), boy that was a hard, disk install, last time I buy from an IBM 360 reseller, ah, all ready, I'll report back later, from home or hospital. ;D

Well, just got back from the hospital, computer hospital I mean, did replace the cmos battery, turned the machine on, and got a blank screen, a beep, pause, beep, pause, beep, etc.  Not having the internet to research beep tones, I called my buddy who fixes machines, he suggested I move the jumper on the pins by the battery, turn the machine on, off, on, off, and reset the pin to it's original place.  He thought that shorting out the cmos this might fix the problem.  It didn't, so this afternoon I visited him with the computer.  He plugs it in, check for burnt cookies smell (funny, I never eat cookies over the open computer - he said it can be a sign that things are going wrong - I thought cookies of any smell was always a sign something is right, oh well).  When he turns it on, it comes up bright and beautiful.  His idea that it was a memory problems, and tested the sticks (a 256 and a 128) and swapped their places, suggesting I might consider replacing the 256 one, when I can afford to buy one (he didn't have one in stock).  So the machine is up and running.  k3b, still can only see one writer and not both.  So, for the mean time, I'm leaving it alone.  I had a terrible night watching TV, what a tool of the devil, so fun like the internet and our forum.

Thanks to everyone who offered help. ;D

I was having a very similar problem as described by OldGuy.  After an extensive search this thread seemed the most related.
Still using 2009.2 KDE 3 until 2010 is ready, so I want everything to work.
My DVD player would not mount many of the K3b burned CD's , but worked fine with K3b burned DVD's .
This is my resolve.... adding a CD-ROM Device Icon to the Desktop.

More specifically....     Right clicked on the desktop
Left click 'Create New'  -  'Link to Device'  -  'CD-ROM Device'  -  Device Tab.
   Enter:   /dev/hdb  (/media/cdrom)       -  click 'OK'

Put the CD in and wait for it to finish trying to open then right click the icon then left click 'Mount' and after it mounted then it worked normal.

Sorry if there is a different thread that covers this but, for the past six months I haven't been able to find it.  I would have started a thread, but I didn't want to be told that I should have searched for the answer.

There's other unsolved threads that have common symptoms. Hope this helps those people too.
