Wallpapers in KDE4

If you elect to install the new KDE4 and want more than one selection of wallpapers for you desktops, try this.


Click the icon at the top right side of the screen. Then click "zoom Out >configure Plasma>Different Activity for Each Desktop> Apply..
Then on the desktop you are using, click the little magnifier glass that has the + sign in it. That should take you back to your desktop.
*note*   You can add different wallpapers while in the configure mode too...

You can also set other items as wallpapers. Check this out.

Right click on your desktop
Select Desktop Settings

The Wallpaper>type field should show Image

Click on the text field and adrop down list will appear that includes:

Color - sets the desktop to a plain colour
Virus - sets a pseudo virus loose on your desktop
Mandelbrot - puts a mandelbrot on your desktop
Weather - changes the wallpaper based on the weather report for your designated locality
Pattern - Sets a pattern as your desktop
Slideshow - shows a slideshow on your desktop
Globe - sets a globe (based on marble) on your desktop

 Just right click on the desktop and then click in the dialog box, below WALLPAPER to the right of PICTURE is an Icon when you mouse over
it pops up Browse.

I searched, and I came up with this thread, thanks.

I've managed to get different wallpapers on each of my (2) desktops, but now the desktop icons have got onto desktop 2 and do not show on desktop 1 where I want them.  I guess that once I have ticked the "different activity" box this applies to these icons as well as to wallpapers (unlike KDE3).  Is there a way either to copy the icons from one desktop to another, or to switch them?

I've messed around, and by a process of trial and error - mostly the latter - have managed to get what was desktop 2 back as desktop 1.  I can't exactly tell you what I did though, part of it was deleting the original desktop 1 and re-booting.

Now, desktop 2 doesn't have the two icons from my desktop folder though.  One is the utilities folder, and the other a link to vuescan (a commercial scanner driver that's far better than xsane).   I don't really need them as they are on dt 1, but I'd like to know how I can add them to dt 2 as an excercise.

In Kde4 you are given the choice whether to make your desktop display folder view or desktop view.  Only folder view will display the icons you mentioned.  Try right clicking on desktop view and change it from desktop to folder and you will see what I mean.

You can also load a widget called "folder view"  which will allow a window to open displaying whatever folder you wish.  I have one displaying my desktop folder so that I can see the icons which I placed there including the utilities folder.

Thanks MCP.  I seem to have had one of each type.

Now I have discovered another problem.  I cannot add icon links to the desktop, e.g. Konqueror, I right click on it in the menus and then click on "Add to desktop" - but it doesn't!

To misquote the famous opening line of a less than famous novel: "KDE4 is a another country: they do things differently there."

if you set your desktop to "Folder View" you'll see those icons you added. The desktop then represents the contents of your Desktop folder.

Thanks Torsten, that's what MCP told me and it works with items already in the Desktop folder.

However, somehow in my experimentation, I seem to have disabled the "Add item to desktop" facility.   I find the item in the menu tree, right click on it and then left click on "Add item to desktop" in the dropdown menu but nothing happens now.  It did work earlier, and the "Add item to panel" button does still work.

It was possible to move the icon from the panel to the desktop, and it worked, but did not appear in the Desktop folder.  I then examined the properties of the icon and found it pointed to /usr/share/applications/KDE.  So I copied Konquerorsu.desktop from this folder into my own  Desktop folder and, hey presto, it worked from there too.  So it's just the copying routine from the context menu that is disabled. 

No doubt it will return when I do a full re-installation when 2010 is available.  At the moment I'm just testing, but it would be interesting to discover if I can fix this.
