Thanks Scoundrel.  I tried to locate this firefox add-on through the FF Add-On interface but it said that it was not found.  However, a google search showed this page.
http://mirror.kr.freebsd.org/mozilla.org/addons/11869/

These methods are sure easier that my "old" way, which was to use "http ripper" to rip to flv, and then "sound konvertor" to convert to mp3.

I've been using the Firefox/Mozilla DownloadHelper.   It adds an option to the top menu bar in Firefox.   When you find a video you want to capture, you can download it and save it in most popular formats  with just a couple of mouse clicks.

See:

I just right click on the flv file, select Actions - Extract Audio to - and select the type of Audio file I want .... mp3, flac, wav etc

I guess I must have something installed from the repository that gives this function ........ most likely

audiokonverter

Dunno if this helps a little, but tripped across:
www.kickyoutube.com

Allows you to save youtube vids in different formats onto your HD.
