Video Editing software?
« on: August 28, 2009, 06:43:21 PM »
Hi, this is my first post here so forgive me if I'm perhaps in the wrong forum. I'm pretty new to Linux but I think I have the hang of most things. The thing that I'm really missing right now is the ability to effectively edit video specifically .avi files. I've seen a number of video editors in the repository but I am so far getting 0% of them to work. The most promising looking, to me, LIVES won't seem to load the jacks audio system and although I've deleted the program and reinstalled it I cannot seem to get back to the original option of loading the jacks system or loading the backup system....

Long story short, I can't edit any of my video and it's totally bumming me out right now. Can anyone give me any suggestions on making LIVES work properly or another video editor that works well?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. ;D

Have you tried avidemux? That's one of the more popular video editors.

I did but Synaptic said it couldn't download the packages from the source. Apparently they had 404 errors on them.  >:(

Most likely the server is updating. In Synaptic, in Settings --> Repositories uncheck whichever is currently checked, and check another. Click OK. Then, in this order, click on Reload, Mark All Upgrades, Apply, and again, Apply, in the pop up window.

If by chance you hit another syncing server, repeat with a different one, until you find one that's fully updated. You want your whole system fully upgraded, to date, before adding any new software. Any upgrades to what is installed will then be handled by the next Upgrade session.

Each time you wish to add new software, do the Upgrade process first. We do a lot of continuous upgrading here, and everything needs to stay in sync, for the system to remain stable.

All the repo servers update on different schedules, not under our control. Most of the time everything just works. When you hit a syncing server, your two choices are, find one that's already done syncing, or wait for the original one to finish.  ;)

pclosusers syncs three time a day, Oregon USA.  Other than PASS, that is your best bet, at the latest and greatest packages.  But, it syncs three time a day, that means, three times a day, you might see that error.  Either switch repos, or wait, just as O-P said.   ;)  Good Luck.

You could try Kdenlive (KDE Non-Linear Video Editor). Easier to use than LIVES.
It's in the repositories. You can download it through Synaptic.
Here's a quote from their website: "Kdenlive is an intuitive and powerful multi-track video editor, including most recent video technologies"
You can learn more on their site if interested.. http://kdenlive.org/

I see no point in starting a new topic as some of the answers to my questions are already here. First, I installed avidemux but can't find it anywhere. So I installed kdenlive which is supposed to be "very easy" to use. Who are they kidding?  ::) Is it really that easy? I don't think so. I can't get passed "add clip"!!! The video (mpeg format) comes on for a split second and then stops. I find the manual too long to digest quickly and I am impatient. Can anyone out there who has used kdenlive give me a few tips to get me going? Alternatively, is there a simpler editor in the repos?

Hi Riki

Did you install avidemux-gtk as well - that should give you a Kmenu option in Video.

If you did you could try a log out and in again.

I'll go back to it and see if I can follow better than kdenlive. Thanks.

OK, got avidemux working. I will now try to figure out how to cut and save clips.

Any reason why you prefer avidemux-gtk over avidemux-qt, since you're using KDE? Just wondering.

I haven't tried qt. Menotu suggested gtk instead of kdenlive and I like it.

I have now tried avidemux-qt and as far as I can see is very similar to avidemux-gtk but I prefer the sliding markers on the latter. BTW, some of the videos open "squeezed" on both qt and gtk and I don't know why.

This is the sort of image I am getting with some video clips, all mpegs. Why should some be OK and others not, distorted? Any ideas?

No problems when I play the videos with SMPlayer...
