kmail. no spel chek. [solved]
« on: August 27, 2009, 11:53:09 PM »
Quote
"ISpell/Aspell could not be started. Please make sure you have ISpell
 or Aspell properly configured and in your PATH"

That's what I get when I try and check the spelling when composing a message.

Path is fine afaik.

Code: [Select]
$ type aspell
aspell is /usr/bin/aspell

Code: [Select]
$ echo $PATH
/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/qt4/bin:/usr/lib/qt4/bin:/home/me/bin:/usr/lib/qt4/bin

Do you get any errors if you type aspell in a konsole?

<command> is one of:
  -?|usage         display a brief usage message
  help             display a detailed help message
  -c|check <file>  to check a file
  -a|pipe          "ispell -a" compatibility mode
  [dump] config    dumps the current configuration to stdout
  config <key>     prints the current value of an option
  [dump] dicts | filters | modes
    lists available dictionaries / filters / filter modes
[options] is any of the following:
  --encoding=<str>            encoding to expect data to be in
  --mode=<str>                filter mode
  -l,--lang=<str>             language code
  -d,--master=<str>           base name of the main dictionary to use

Try running kmail from a konsole. Maybe you'll get some messages then.

Nope. I get the cursor back straight after I do 'kmail' (as opposed to getting the cursor back when a program you shell finishes)

Went though the whole compose new mail, type some crap, check spelling, quit kmail and nothing got dumped to the console.  :-\

Make sure ASpell is set up in KDE..  I had a similar problem and fixed it by setting things up...   To do this you need to:

- Open the KDE Control Center

- Choose: KDE Components, then Spell Checker

- In the Spell Checker window, make sure the 'dictionary' and 'client' boxes are set to ASpell

Let it be known that jwt873 is a legend! Your suggestion fixed it. Thank you.

This also fixed (I didn't realize it was broken) the spell checker in the kwrite text editor as well. I'm a happy chappy.  :)

Thanks must go to kjpetrie also. I can't believe, being a command line kinda guy, that I forgot to check the output of a gui program from the shell when having difficulty with it.  :-[

Marking it as solved.  :)

I'm having this problem with Kate, Kmail, and Tomboy in PCLOS 2009.1. I get the same error message. I applied jwt873's fix, but I still get the error message. Oddly, spell-checking in Opera works, but not in the other programs.
