Icons and taskbar

Just a minor little thing im having a problem with.  If i click on my PC and pull up all the programs I have and right click on an icon to move it to the desktop or the taskbar/panel, its doesnt give me the option to do either.  Also I have tried just to cop and icon to the desktop and when I do the amarok icon stacks on top of the trash bin and they cannot be seperated.  I only have utilities, amarok and the trasj=hbin on the desktop.  I tried to add thunderbird icon and thats when the other icons stacked themselves on top of each other.  Cant drop icons into taskbar/panel and cannot place new icons on desktop.  Any Ideas?  Also I shut all the desktop effects off and it did speed things up quit a bit, but still nowhere close to what my machine runs on 3.5

you can simply drag the icon to the desktop and choose "copy here"...
right click an empty space of desktop and select icons, sort... it should do it...

Well that was weird.  I logged off and back in and it fixed it.  Im using KDE4.  Seems like any changes to my desktop Im having to lag out and back, didnt have to do that on 3.5
