Packaged BSNES
« on: August 13, 2009, 09:51:26 AM »
Hello :)

I have successfully created my first RPM package today. I have created an RPM for the SNES Emulator BSNES. It works well right now and I would like to upload it but I don't know where I could do that. I can't reach any site which is mentioned in the stickies ???.
Could someone tell me please what I should do next? :)

The first thing to do is to post here. If you have a place that you can host the file, post a link so that other can take a look.

There appears to be 2 other snes emulators in synaptic. It would be helpful to have an explanation why another is beneficial.

As a new packager, I have found tremendous assistance and tools here in this section of the forum to get me started. There are now packages of my favorite programs in the repos!

Welcome to PCLOS.

Yes, there is ZSNES and snes9x in the repository but I think that it would be good to have BSNES in the repo too. It's the most accurate SNES emulator. Couldn't find a game which didn't work in it and all games are emulated exactly how they should be. The only bad thing is that the hardware requirements are very high.

I put them on filefront. Here are the links :)

I will take a look at the spec file and building the src.rpm. However, I am not a gamer and do not have any games to test. :-\ Any suggestions on what to test?

Hmmm, you could check out Zelda, Super Mario World, Super Castlevania, Super Metroid or Final Fantasy III or whatever game you find on the net ;) It shouldn't matter which game you choose.

Could you provide a link to a game that is unquestionably legal for me to download and test? (I do not, nor have I ever owned a Nintendo system).

You could check out this Public Domain games. But there is a small chance that not every game will work because this are not reall SNES games.

Ok, I am building now with the source from the homepage and your spec file. When I am done, I'll try a game. Your spec file looks good to my amateur eyes, but it is missing a menu entry.

Hehe, i hope that the spec isn't too bad. It's my first try. I wasn't sure about the menue entry because BSNES installs a desktop file already and a menue entry has been created every time I installed the rpm ^^

Ok, I built the package using the source from the developer's website and your spec file. Then, I downloaded and pacman clone and it worked perfectly. The supplied bsnes.desktop file in the source put a menu item in 'More Applications -> Emulators -> bsnes'.

Maybe we can get a developer to test, and then ask to be able to upload to contribs. I am just a beginner myself, so we'll need someone else to come along and take it from here.

Thx for testing :)

I am glad that it worked well. Now how to find a developer who would test it and upload it to the contribs xD

I would start another thread in this section and call it 'Need testers - bsnes'.
