LXDE trashcan
« on: August 12, 2009, 02:42:26 AM »
I have been taking a look at the LXDE desktop as recently packaged for PCLinuxOS - and I'm impressed! Many thanks to Neal and his colleagues for all their work on it.

However - I cannot find any sign of trash functionality. It looks as if when you delete a file, that's it! This is a bit of a showstopper for everyday use by someone like me. Is there a workaround of any kind for this, or can we expect an enhancement soon?

Thanks in anticipation for any advice. This DE looks good to me - I prefer it to XFCE at a first glance.

Currently, LXDE has no trash function. It is delete only.

The work around for this is to create a folder, either on your desktop on in your home directory and name it 'trash' (with or without upper case T; your choice). Any files you want to send to the trash will need to be manually moved to this directory. You can delete or restore them later. I'll try to come up with something better, but for now, this is it.

PCMan is rewriting his file manager at present. I'll see if I can find out if he plans to add a trash function. If it's not in his plan, I'll make a request. No guarantee that he will but maybe.

I have applied an experimental trashcan patch that is currently under development tonight to pcmam file manager. It will move the file to the trashcan when you select delete and you can open the trashcan and restore the file. What doesn't work yet is the empty trashcan or delete files from the trashcan. As Neal said the pcman file manager is currently getting rewritten so you can probably expect the trashcan function to work 100% in a later release.

Neal and texstar - thank you your prompt responses! I will be keen to see how this DE develops, as my first impressions of it are very positive.

I'm trying to get a hold of the guy who did the trashcan patch as it isn't functioning quite right. Would be a nice feature to add to LXDE.

My current LXDE has a fully functioning trash, complete with the proper icons that show trash when full, and empty inside of PCManFM.

So does mine. The only thing that doesn't work is restoring from trash. I have to cut the file from trash and paste to restore.

Agreed, the "Restore" option does not work.  ???

Also, my wife would like to 'see' the icon on the desktop. Is this even in the plans from the lxde developers?

Are you using 2010? Or are you still using 2009? If 2009, there will be no change as it is using the older PCManFM which had no trash function, and the patch for a trash function wasn't working.

I am using 2010.10 and pcmanfm has the trashcan function, but I was hoping to create a fully functioning link on the desktop. My wife has trouble with things that 'look' different on the computer, even if they are fully functioning, but in a different way.

Galen,
Open leafpad, copy and paste the code below to it --
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Link
Icon=user-trash.png
Name=Trash
GenericName=Trash
Comment=Contains trash
Categories=FileManager;FileManager;X-MandrivaLinux-System-FileTools;
URL=trash:///
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
MimeType=x-directory/normal;inode/directory;
Encoding=UTF-8
X-Desktop-File-Install-Version=0.11

Save it to her Desktop as Trash.desktop.

The trash icon should be in /usr/share/icons/oxygen/32x32/places. You can move it to /usr/share/icons.
