slow vertical scrolling in web browser
« on: August 09, 2009, 09:22:56 AM »
I have a Uniwill 223II0 laptop ( http://www.uniwill.com/products/mobility/223ii0/223ii0.php?HL=2&M=2 )
Specifications:
Display  12.1" TFT LCD WXGA Display 1280X800
CPU  Intel® Pentium® M Processor @ 1.86GHz
Graphics  Intel® Extreme Graphics 2 Technology up to 64MB*
Chipset  Intel 855GME & Intel ICH4-M
Memory  1.25 GB DDR 333 SO DIMM

I just did a fresh install of the latest 2009 available and everything works great... expcept vertical scrolling in firefox. Its slow, and laggy... reminds me of windows w/o having the right video driver installed. To be honest I am not sure how to install a video driver in PCLOS, but im sure i could figure it out... I have 3d desktop enhancments enabled and they all look nice and pretty and dont have any lag, opengl things seem to run fine... but vertical scrolling bogs the system down hardcore.... the current video driver is the "Intel 810 and later" Should I be using something else? PCLOS doesnt seem to have this issue on any of the other machines I've installed it on. Any help appreciated. Thank you in advance.

did you select "use smooth scrolling" in preferences, advanced, general?

Hello JDT
in Konsole try running >
[user@localhost ~]$ top
while scrolling Firefox
and see what is hogging CPU or RAM
(if imwheel, kill in KSysGuard - Process Table)
see how things go then

hmmm if I turn off 3d desktop enhancments it seems to work fine.... and seeing as how my uniwill 223II0 is only giving me 16MB of vram... I suppose thats an ok thing... wish I could tell the bios to allocate more to video memory... i rather like how pretty PCLOS can be.

Is there any reason I should use PCLOS 2009 vs 2007? my specs are 1.86ghz Pentium M w/ 1.25gb of ddr 333 and a 4200rpm ide drive...  2007 seems to run much faster and im not sure what "improvements" I would be missing out on.

Wow.  What a difference.  Switched to compiz-fusion setting and everything sped right up!
Thanks

using kde4 and compiz everything improves compared to kwin desktop effects

your video card as other intel video cards can and will use more or less vram, it takes ram form system according to usage, as you say up to 64 mbs but if it doesn't need it will only use 10 or less

"wish I could tell the bios to allocate more to video memory... i rather like how pretty PCLOS can be."

ceratin bios will allow you to do this but 99% of the time intel video cards won't let you do changes, it is done automatically by video card, os and video driver

pclinux 2009 was a updated version of pclinux 2007, both currently are unsupported because a update of some basic parts of pclinux tools and kernel will break those systems

right now 2010.12 kde4 is the base, also lxde, xfce4, e17 and gnome to mention some desktops are available with the latest versions

there is many functions you can disable and enable to improve performance and give lots of eyecandy, including emerald, be prepared to do that travel, take water and food before entering there  :D
