Embedded videos and KDE 2009.2 : problems..
« on: August 02, 2009, 09:39:45 AM »
Hello
Have been happily bopping along in Minime 2008 and KDE 2009.1: neither fully updated as yet.

D'ld the Kde and Gnome 2009.2 into VMWare WS 6.52 just for a trial run  ;)
Vanilla installs. No VM Tools. Using VM sound and vid cards.
Updated via Synaptic;

In the KDE: Firefox as browser, Mplayer plugin: embedded videos are playing s..l..o..w and sound is the same.
Flash seems fine : sound and vids.
Ran all the config tools I know: cant fix  :-\

In the Gnome release Gecko-media player: all good.

Found a similar issue in the 2009.4 LXDE release with FF and Mplayer.

So: what Have I done wrong?  :-[
Not had this with other install trials that I can recall.

Hesitant now to update the 2009.1 that seems to be/is running well.
Advices please.
Regards.

Any help for this pond scum plz.

Add: have updated KDE 2009.1 from above post: all players and vids run normally.
So: some issue in the 2009.2 installs ?? or the VMs??
Regards

Several of us have encountered problems with mplayer and embedded video.  Searching the forums will show you several threads on this point.  My problems were having the video out of sync with the image.  The recommended fix was to install VLC player, however the current version in the repositories is buggy and, to make matters worse, Tex reports that the prior working version will not build properly against the current version of xulrunner.

One suggested recommendation for Firefox is to install the MediaPlayerConnectivity Add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/446) that permits loading embedded videos into an external player.  I personally have not tested this approach as I had a backup copy of the prior VLC builds and they are working just fine for me.

As to your particular problem, it may be due to CPU load, particularly loaded inside a virtual machine.  On my eeepc900 video is very choppy and the sound all garbled when the CPU is throttled back and a background process starts running.  My impression/assumption is that mplayer takes a lot of CPU when streaming video.

I have been using VMware VM s for some time for distro testing, learning, and config-ing as I wean meself away from MS, overall a fntastic utility, and I have no real issues with most distros.
( erm: fedora gentoo & debian aside that is, heh,  & I doubt that is the VMWare)

I have plenty of CPU : quad core, plenty of RAM in host; 4G and always use >1G in VMs with 'two processor' option.

To reiterate re PCLOS:
All installed in 'same VMs in VMWare V6 on same host XP & HW: 'vanilla' installs, no special configging, updated with synaptic as indicated.

Fully updated install of pclosMinMe2008: all good
New installed updated MiniMe 2009.1 Problem with Mplayer in Ff and choppy Flash

Updated 2009.1 KDE All good
New installed updated 2009.2 KDE: no go.
?? Why
New Installed 2009.4 LXDE in FF and Midori: No Go.

Fresh Install Gnome 2009.2 Gm player = All good, Updated all good.

I have checked all the player configs are set the same.

Some of my issues with distros are Me some might be software/HW.
Check the attachment for current my available VMs.
LOL, I'm such a loser.  ;D
I have simple enduser needs: browsing, office docs, printing scanning and MM

I'm no expert, I've been using PCLOS live and dual boot and in VMs since 2007: always been imho really the best implementation of a Linux desktop.
Some issues, but always fixed in the past.
Absolutely spot on for peripherals for me.

The common feature here seems to be the 2009.2+ KDE releases/remasters I think, but I am likely to be wrong.  :D
Doesn't explain why the updated earlier versions are running w/o any issues.

I bet there is an easy fix, but ??? wot!!
I like to stay utd, but this is a pita and would prevent me using the recent releases.
I hope some peeps with more knowledge than me night read this.
regards
In hope.  ;)

Very strange...I will keep watching this thread.  Sounds like either some software package is missing or a config file is incorrect, but I have no idea what it might be.

Just a thought - have you considered giving VirtualBox a whirl in place of VMWare ?

I never have any problems running VM's in VBox
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver
