Hello,
I hope this is a suitable forum for this type of query. I previously posted twice in other sections on a related subject, but received no reply. Maybe I will have more luck in here.
Essentially, I am wanting to install SpamAssassin 3.2.5 along with spamc/spamd. I have read and tried many things so far, but for now my issues are as follows.
The 'spamassassin' package under Synaptic seems to be the previous version 3.2.4 which, although not ideal, might be ok and easier for me than attempting (again) to install 3.2.5+spamc/spamd manually from the SA website.
However, the package details in Synaptic for 'spamassassin' seem to be incorrect or misleading on a few issues. As far as I can perceive, anyway:-
This distribution includes the spamd/spamc components
which create a server that considerably speeds processing of mail.
I haven't managed to find them. Where are they?
Do we in fact have to also install the 'spamassassin-spamc' and 'spamassassin-spamd' packages under Synaptic?
Install dcc package to get Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse (DCC) support.
I can't find it under Synaptic. Is it in fact not there? Do we have to go to the dcc site and install it manually?
Install pyzor package to get Pyzor support.
As above, except 'pyzor' not 'dcc'.
At this stage I am quite confused and would appreciate some clarity on the above points.
The SpamAssassin site itself isn't very verbose or ordered in its docs, and there's only so much success I can achieve from randomly surfing the net looking for bits and pieces of advice which may or not be relevant or indeed correct.
In view of the above points, or indeed despite them, would I be better off ignoring Synaptic for my SpamAssassin install, and manually install version 3.2.5 + spamc + spamd + Pyzor + DCC? (maybe with the exception of using Synaptic for required and some available optional perl modules)
So far my manual attempts at doing it all have essentially worked regarding use of Getmail and Procmail with SpamAssassin, but I have yet to get my head around usage of spamc and spamd which I need to in order to speed up the mail processing.
Here's hoping for some advice, preferably from similar experience,
Lee
