Because some sites require Silverlight to show their content, e.g. movie streams.

What he said!  There is no content on this earth worth watching if you have to use silverlight and to have that mono on your computer. Installing it does give microsoft a claim on linux because you can't really write a useful application in mono without using some of the not covered patents of dot net.

Well I've got gecko, shockwave, vlc, novell moon silverlight, Windows media,
quicktime, realplayer, every plugin there is for firefox from PCL. 

They all work, was watching college football last night.
