Network / internet connection basics ?

I've just installed PCLOS2009 on a PC and I can't connect to internet nor to a local network.

I don't think anything is wrong (yet) because I am a total novice about networks.
Usually it connects smoothly right from the beginning (other PC's does) but this doesn't and I've tried (without knowing what I am doing) to configure an internet connection (cable modem) but failed, and also failed to connect to my other PCLINUXOS PC which should share internet and some foders usinf Samba.

First I need to understand the basics behind networking and internet connection.

I suppose there are some levels of functioning I have to make sute it works:

1) hardware (the 10/100 PCI card, the cable)
2) the hadrware driver
3) the TCP/IP protocol
4) some more stuff to make a direct internet connection or connect to a home network?
5) when the network is up and functioning, I can configure stuff like sharing (samba)?

When I discover that internet doesn't work (Firefox tells me "Address not found. Firefox can't find the host server for the provided address.") I don't have a clue on which level it fails, and I don't know how to test from 1) to 5) that it is OK.

It seeems that the network PCI card is functioning and got a proper driver (but I am not 100% sure of that either)

What tools do I have to check what is wrong, and in what order should I proceed?

Usually, when I am setting up a network, I just press buttons in some setup-guide and if it doesn't work I just change randomly some stuff, and usually (after hours) it suprisingly works. I'm tired of this and tired of not understand the basics of networking.  :-[

I hope some of you nice guys out there could give me some hints to learn from. Or some links.

There are lots of people on this forum that are more knowledgeable than I am, but I'll start..... and forgive my post if you already know all this.......

If it is a direct connection (ethernet cord into the computer) it should probably already have been recognized.... you should be good to go......  If you have the cord plugged in, plus a wireless card (some people have both) one of them has to be disabled as they won't both work at once. Either unplug the cord or delete the wireless connection.

If it is wireless, you should probably start here....

You would be better of putting this in the networking section, saying

, doesn't tell people alot, it's the make and chipset that would help, that way you could receive a quicker reply.

How have you tried to configure?, what route did you take, what drivers have you installed, these are the things that would help to determine where you've gone wrong.

The above is just a little advice.

Ok, lets see. Give this a try and report back the results.

in your web browser, instead of typing in a domain name type in the following IP address
DO NOT use "http:// or www."  66.112.77.219   Just type in the numbers only.  Did you get to a webpage? Did it give you and error? If so what did the error say?    Let us know and we will figure out where to go from there.

The PC I can't connect:

Network configuration:
i]static IP address: 192.168.1.2
netmask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS server 1: 192.168.1.2


When I try to set up this network, and start it I got the message "You don't have a network connection. Use the 'setup network/LAN connection wizard' - but that's just what I did!
But the monitor says "network is up on eth0:"

The other PC:

From the machine that you CAN NOT connect on can you open a console window and type in the following

netstat -r

You should see the results something like this

[danny@dannys ~]$ netstat -r
Kernel IP routing table

192.168.1.0         *               255.255.255.0         U         0 0          0 eth1
link-local             *               255.255.0.0            U         0 0          0 eth1

It sound like ICS isn't working.  What did you use to setup your internet connection sharing?

I just noticed that there is no gateway.  There should be a gateway address here

Thank you for your reply.

I'm afraid I've encountered a worse problem  - the motherboard just broke down  :'(

I think I have to change all capacitors before it can run again. Well... I'll do that after my vacations.... I'll be back in a few weeks or so if I can make it work again.

with some plates of net alone I obtained with this command ....

# eth0tools -s speed 10 half duplex autoneg off
