Can anyone explain v4l and kernels?
« on: July 05, 2009, 05:05:14 AM »
Been reading about kernel support for 4vl - should be included and all, but my two webcams (an eyetoy and a creative) don't work outofthebox with 2.6.26 (or 2.6.27). It appears that support is builtin (make config) but I need the gspcav dkms driver and a driver from outside (actually in package suggest now) to make the them work.

Is it the kernel that need patches or configuration? Or is it necessary to create dkms rpm's for these 4vl supported devices?

If it is supposed to be handled with dkms, I'll start building the eyetoy thingey and update the gspcav to compile in 2.6.27,

cheers

As a matter of interest ...... are you referring to v4l  or v4l2 ?

My experience is that I can use v4l webcam in 2.6.26.8 but not in the .27 kernel.
I must use a suitable driver in the .26 kernel.

So it seems to me that there is support for v4l in .26 but not in .27 kernels for PCLOS.

Maybe I am mistaken .... if so I would appreciate a pointer, as I cannot seem to get my webcam working with the .27 kernel which I would prefer to use.

Well, both :-)

I'm using ZoneMinder that has support for v4l and v4l2 and for testing I use small webcams - but neither works without loading v4l drivers. Just need to know if I should build dkms modules or wait for kernel patches?
