Hello, pinoc - excuse me please, but I seem to be encountering some difficulty with running getopenoffice successfully.  It exits with a "repository... not configured properly" message; however, it seems to me as though the repository settings in Synaptic should meet its requirement.  Did I perhaps miss a step somewhere?

The installation is fresh; Minime 09 on a 701 EeePC, fully updated to Minime 10 from the 'frozen' KDE3 repo.  No other unusual issues with this install; everything has proceeded normally.  The system is installed into a / partition on /dev/sda1, /var on /dev/sdb1, and /home on /dev/sdb2, with all partitions primary ReiserFS with noatime set.  Grub was set to 'Clear /tmp at each boot' during the install, and the 'nosmp' parameter was also enabled.

Hi vc,
you are correct  ;) And until two days ago I was unaware of the fact that getopenoffice did not work when using YouCanToo's frozen repo. This is now fixed and an updated rpm will be available very soon (probably today, will make another post for that). Moreover, addlocale did not work either with YouCanToo's frozen repo and this has been fixed as well. More very soon!
regards,
-p.

Update on getopenoffice and only for those of you using the frozen repo of YouCanToo:

Please start Synaptic, press Reload, and you should now find an updated version of getopenoffice (1.6-2). Please use this updated version to install/update/add a new localized version of the latest OpenOffice 3.2 into your system.
have fun,

Unfortunately, the 1.6-2 version does not yet appear in Synaptic, despite refreshing.  It is indeed now in YouCanToo's repository nevertheless, so I was able to download it from there directly and install it with rpm -Uvh.  Perhaps the applicable repository package list should be updated accordingly; aside from that, however, I do wish to thank YouCanToo for this particular package addition!

Pinoc, your script performs flawlessly, and I wish to thank you as well.  I selected the en_GB locale, the install ran smoothly, and OpenOffice seems so far to be running properly.  An Excel spreadsheet of 533KB in size opened from a fresh start in 35 seconds, which seems about usual for a 701 EeePC with the original 512MB of system memory.

Well done, pinoc!

Hi vc,
thanks for the remark. Note sent to YouCanToo so the package list will be updated soon and then the new rpms appear in Synaptic.
wrt OO startup time, you could try to see if this helps, maybe?

Hi,

I just installed pclos2009.2 and used " you can too " s repos.

I could not retrieve/install " get openoffice " via synaptic.
I installed it from a Thai mirror.
After switching back to " you can too" repos,
I clicked on "install openoffice.desktop " from the utilities folder.
Got a message that my repos were not properly configured ( as someone above ).
Didn't do anything about it, and/but went to " Start/system/configuration/get openoffice" and the script started immediately and installed properly.

So, I don't have a problem. Just wanted to let you know about the behavour

Hi Xenaflux,
as you could see from the previous posts we do not have getopenoffice visible in Synaptic right now when using YouCanToo's repo because we need to refresh the package list on this repo, which will take maybe even a day because of some other technical reasons. However, the correct getopenoffice 1.6-2 is already in YouCanToo's repo and you can install it as explained in the last post by vc. If you used the Thai mirror then you installed a getopenoffice version other than 1.6-2 and that, when using YouCanToo's repo, will provide the error you mentioned because only 1.6-2 has a fix to be compliant with YouCanToo's repo. getopenoffice 1.6-2 will work with any repo. 1.6-1 will work with any repo but YouCanToo's repo (or mirrors thereof if they exist). Hope this helps,
regards,
-p.

Hello, pinoc - I have performed your request with only one minor amendment:  I set the OO memory usage amount to 200MB rather than 250MB, as the system has only 512MB total.

Startup time on the same 533KB Excel spreadsheet has indeed improved, though not as significantly - from 35 seconds at the former default 20MB memory usage setting, to 30 seconds with the amended 200MB memory usage setting.

Heh!  I was not even aware there was any such issue in the first place!  My impression was that such startup delays are normal for OpenOffice - the only 'annoyance' I'd encountered previously with the OpenOffice startup behaviour was merely the lack of the usual KDE launch indication.

<Modify>

I have now discovered that the 1.6-2 version of pinoc's getopenoffice script has indeed been added into YouCanToo's repository package list, along with an updated version of addlocale.  Thank you both, gentlemen!  Synaptic now updates both packages in its proper manner, the getopenoffice script functions perfectly, and it would seem at this point that all issues have been completely resolved.

vc,
maybe play with the 'Memory per object' and 'Enable systray quickstarter'. On my virtual machine OO starts in 2 secs.

announcing getopenoffice 1.7 with these changes:
- changed to work with the upcoming 2010 release
- will only work with the new 2010 repo
- unfortunately no longer works in a 2010 live session but only on an installed 2010 release

have fun,
-p.

Note:
Users wanting to stay with a pre-2010 release can use the previous getopenoffice version 1.6-2 from YouCantoo's repo to install OpenOffice. If you use YouCanToo's repo then you will find it in Synaptic. If you use a different 2007 repo then copy/paste the following two commands into a terminal in your user-account:

Code: [Select]
wget http://kde3.pclosusers.com/pclosfiles/pclinuxos/2007/RPMS.main/getopenoffice-1.6-2pclos2010.i586.rpm
su -c 'rpm -Uvh getopenoffice-1.6-2pclos2010.i586.rpm'
Now you can update to, or install, the new OpenOffice 3.2 by running
Code: [Select]
getopenoffice in the terminal or from
PCmenu -> System -> Configuration -> Get OpenOffice

update on getopenoffice 1.7 (already available in the 2010 repo and on 2010beta2):
- OO-info now placed in user's HOME instead of Desktop
- removed support for OpenOffice 2.4 - 3.1
- reset original repo-configuration in case of problems after updating the online repository
- updated all 13 getopenoffice translations for the window information messages

have fun,
