This new OpenOffice is so sloooow at startup, for now I can live with it, waiting for the new ISO.
Pinoc, you are great with the getopenoffice project. Just wanted to say thank you!!!
Ed

4 seconds for me

It takes 9 seconds to open first document after a full reboot. Less then a second each time after that...

My advices for faster OpenOffice startup:

Open any document.

Go to Tools > Options and then click on OpenOffice.org > Memory.

Change the value of Use for OpenOffice.org to 256 and [OK] the window.

Close the document and reopen it.

Plus if You still think its to slow You may want to have a look here.

Hope this helps.

Andy

EDIT 1: FYI my machine is not even close to something that could be called speed deamon... Single core 1.5 GHz Intel Celeron CPU, 2 Gigs of RAM and 256 MB Intel 915 graphics... For more specs google Acer Travelmate 2420... and it opens OpenOffice.org documents even faster when the gtk-recordmydesktop is not hogging the CPU...

EDIT 2: Doubleclick on the video posted above to open the video on Youtube site. From there You can watch it in Full screen mode.

Pinoc-that is a formidable feature set!! A good reminder of all the effort that has gone into getopenoffice. Great work!! I hope I didn't sound unappreciative.  ;D
Thanks for your reply.

John,
no, in no way unappreciative! These features have grown over time, are based on common sense, and suggestions from our users. But there is always room for improvement, maybe I should include AndrzejL's memory fix in the next version  ;)

How can I go back to an older version, say 3.1 to see if it will fix the problem I am having, The issue seems to have started with the last 2 or 3 upgrades. Thanks.

Hi ff103,
instructions on how to revert to 3.1.1 are outlined here. Yet, I doubt that this will be helpful in your case, seems to me you have a generic problem with your installation which is independent of, but impacting, OpenOffice. Did you try to open your odt-file on a different PC (Windows or Linux) with OpenOffice just to see if they can be opened/worked with at all?

Thank you pinoc, the odt and doc files are fine, OO does open them, BUT, when I make a change to the file, OO will not save it or anything else,it just freezes up and has to be killed to close. OO worked flawlessly on this machine for the past couple of years and only after the last couple of updates has developed this problem. I'll try to go back to 3.1 and see if that helps. Thanks for your assistance.

Sorry, don't know what to do with this:
[xxxx@localhost OO311]$ sudo -c 'apt-get install *.rpm'
sudo: illegal option `-c'
usage: sudo -K | -L | -V | -h | -k | -l | -v
usage: sudo [-HPSb] [-p prompt] [-u username|#uid]
            { -e file [...] | -i | -s | <command> }

Let me just jump in on this: it should be su -c 'apt-get install *.rpm', not sudo....

@ff103

Could these files have a permission problem?   I have had files show up as "read only" and are therefore not modifiable.  There is an icon somewhere that allows you to edit a copy of the file, and then I can save them as the same file name as previously.

Thanks tschommer, that did it for the install, but at this point I have given up on fixing OO on this machine, the install of 3.1 does the same thing as all the other installs, it freezes up as soon as I try to save a document, so I guess I will wait on 2010 and hope for the best there.

ff103, I couldn't find any reference to this, but before opening OO, try renaming your .ooo3 to something like .ooo3.orig, then start OO and see if it now works.

To restore your original settings delete the newly created .ooo3 folder and rename your original one back to .ooo3.

Please excuse me if this had already been covered.

Thanks again tschommer: yes I have been there and done that, but just for good measure, I went there and did that again with the 3.1 that I re-installed. This is really strange, I can open a saved document and edit it and save it again, but if I open OO and create a new document, it freezes as soon as I click on File>Save. So I have been from the newest version and back to the old version that I started with and all of them do the same thing so I guess I must wait for 2010 and do a complete install and hopefully that will take care of the issue. I really appreciate everyone's help on this but at this point it looks to un-fixable(is that a real word?)
