announcing GOO 0.7 with these changes:

Regression-bugfix:
- further OO-locales can now be added again (didn't work in 0.6)

New feature:
- GOO sets OO to use its own dialogs when opening/saving files, avoiding potential related problems in different WM
- GOO and OO is now working in PCLinuxOS KDE4!
- GOO will test for, and offer to install,
Code: [Select]
webcore-fonts in order to improve both, OO cross-platform compatibility, and the display of international text in the system.
- improved detection of system users
- new option to completely remove OO from your system

have fun,
-pinoc

Good work pinoc,

Is there any uninstall option?  It would be useful to be able to clear out an unsatisfactory  installation and start again from scratch.
How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

Howard,

is there already, please see the original post on how to use it:
3rd feature:
Quote
* Fixing a borked OO-installation: if your OO-installation is corrupt, or OO does not work anymore for whatever reason you can run GOO, select your OO-locale, and GOO will give you a fresh working installation of OpenOffice.

Important note 4, part 2:
Quote
Start GOO and a popup window will tell you that this OO-locale is already installed. In this window, press Cancel to have GOO reinstall OO. Please be aware that reinstalling OO will remove all OO-locales and all OO-customizations of all users!

good luck,  ;)

PS: in fact, there is only a reinstall but no uninstall option. Should I add an option: uninstall OO completely?

Pinoc,

Thanks, I should have remembered that - but I think that a complete uninstall would be a good idea if you have time to look at it.  (I haven't got the latest version of GOO yet.)

By the way, I did install side by side, installations for US, UK and Finnish, but I hadn't realised that there would be three full versions of everything - I had expected just a relatively small overlay for each locale.  Luckily my partition did have enough memory!

Howard,

only the first OO-install is a 'full' install (e.g. 51 packages for en-US). Any further OO-locale will only add the locale-specific components (10-15 packages or so).

And I will add the OO-uninstall, if you can use GOO to install why not also to uninstall  ;)

thanks for the suggestion!
best,

Howard,

GOO 0.7 is now in the repos including the new option: Completely remove OO

Now you can use GOO for any OO-related task: install, upgrade, add a OO-locale, reinstall or fix OO, and uninstall OO.

have fun!

Hi pinoc,

suppose I have the all the files of open-office 3.1 backed up and want to update existing OO-3.0 install in some other machine
not connected to internet (running PCLOS-2009.1).  will the following strategy work.
1. install GOO-0.7 in the second machine manually (by copying the necessary file from first machine and using rpm command)
2. uninstall OO-3.0 in the second machine by running GOO-0.7
3. copy the OO-3.1 files from first machine to second machine using a pen drive.
4. install OO-3.1 in the second machine manually (rpm -Uvh *rpm)

will this work ?

thanks in advance.

Asok,

I'll probably be expelled from the forum for saying this, but if you want the US version I think your easiest option is to download the tarball of the Official OOo version from their website and use that, it's only one file to move around and as far as I can see runs in PCLOS without any problems (tested with minime 2007 and 2009 and the full PCLOS 2007).   You'll find installation instructions on the OOo site.   (Use the mandriva desktop-integration.)

Hi asok,

your strategy looks fine to me, just try, it should work.

You can use GOO to uninstall any version of OO from 2.4 to the current 3.1, and you do not need internet access to uninstall OO with GOO. So this part should be fine.
To install the new OO on a machine without internet access follow step 2 described in the original post.
And exactly this was your plan  :D

good luck,
-pinoc

Howard,

your suggestion should work as well but I think there is a reason why Tex repackaged OO for PCLinuxOS, so it might be safer to use the rpms from our repo.  ;)

Maybe there is, but I'm not sure what.  All I can see so far (after several weeks) is that the automatic updates are disabled and the dialogue box sizes have been changed - not always an improvement - try the find and replace box in Finnish (not enough room for the longer text)!  I also had to revert to the OOo standard save/load boxes (Tools>options>general) as the lists of files didn't come up properly.

Thanks pinoc and Howard for the replies.

I think I will try both the methods.  From my experience of firefox, I have seen that a single tarball install has a lot of advantages besides being easy to move about, like Howard said.  I had troubles with pclos install of firefox 3.5 but the tarball works just fine.

On a system connected to internet I installed OO-3.1 using GOO and the entire process went off smoothly, without a single hitch.  The script took care of everything, even configuring the apt resource and then disabling it at the end.  That is why I thought of leaving the job of uninstalling OO-3.0 to GOO, since it does a fine job of it.

Thanks again pinoc and Howard.

version 0.9 has the following changes:

- further improved detection of system users
- GOO will test several OO-repos for their accessibility. If all fail, the program will interrupt with an error message.
- GOO will output an error message if the OO-install was not successful either due to manually aborting the installation or Internet connection failed during downloading packages.

have fun,
