Thanks mustarastas, I guess it has been there all along and I didn't find it because I was looking in "openoffice" searches.  I installed all of the bits except the development ones - but still cannot work out how to use it.  It doesn't seem to appear in "writing aids" (Tools>options>languages>writing aids.)  I also noted when googling voikko that there is a 3.xx version for mandriva.  The one in our repo must be quite old as it's marked 2007 and must date back to OOo 2.x.

Please look into this and see what you make of it.  If it works, then instructions in English would be appreciated here.  Kiitos.  (Just to show I do know a little Finnish!)

voikko was a pain in the backside and causing all kind of issues to get it working properly with the old OO version 3.0 in the times of 2009.1 and before. I have no idea how the situation is now wrt voikko, maybe some Finnish user could help get this working, or maybe it does work already without problems and only needs appropriate settings?

Thanks for the warning.  Actually Blackbird is a Finn - or at least lives there, that's why I asked him.  I might also try a test installation in a separate partition.  It's a pity they didn't stick with the standard OOo dictionaries - a few years ago there was one that worked quite well in Finnish.

I tried installing the PCLOS version of Voikko and after having tried to get it working in OOo for over an hour I'm coming to the conclusion that pinoc is right: it is a pain.

I did manage to run the spellchecker from the commandline -- checking the spelling of one word at a time, which I didn't find very useful. And no luck with OOo.

One reason might be that there's no package like Mandriva's "openoffice.org-voikko" in the PCLOS repos: at least this package contains an .oxt file that the PCLOS packages lack.

I did, however, find something more ominous in an answer to a question in the Finnish FAQ: The question was "How do I install Voikko in version 2.x or 3.x of OpenOffice.org under Linux?", and part of the answer was:

Unfortunately OpenOffice.org does not make it possible to specify the interdependencies between extensions (openoffice.org-voikko) and external components (libvoikko). They can only be defined through a Linux distribution's own package-management system, and consequently Voikko can only be used together with a version of OpenOffice.org that comes from the official sources of the distribution. In this respect Voikko is fundamentally different from the earlier closed-source spellchecker Soikko: Voikko is a spellchecking component that comes with the operating system, Soikko had to be installed separately for every application.

(I translated the above almost word for word without aspiring for elegance, because while I seemed to understand what I was translating I still don't know what it means in practice.)

I'd also like to add that the Finnish documentation is mainly about linguistics and the algorithms used in "libvoikko". It actually says less about installing Voikko than the English "Quick installation instructions".

Thanks for that.  It sounds as though it's a lot of work for a very minority interest.  I guess my wife will just have to check her own spelling (she's pretty good at finding my errors in English!)

announcing GOO 0.6 with this new feature:

* reinstall of OO3.1: this is useful if a previous OO3.1-installation got borked, either because of not having used GOO to install OO, or for whatever other reason...

The new reinstall option is available if you have OO3.1 installed (obviously) and then run GOO and select your current OO-locale. This option should fix a borked or incorrectly installed version of OO. No more manual instructions are needed to get the installation fixed but GOO 0.6 will take care of this.

One question before I install OO-3.1 with GetOpenOffice.  Does  GetOpenOffice allow to keep the downloaded packages in cache even after
installation is complete ? I have a few computers running PCLOS but not all are connected to Internet, so I want to reuse the downloaded packages.

Hi asok,

you will have the option to keep the downloaded files in the cache if you run GOO on a installed system (but not in a live-session). After the first install, and having said Yes to keep the OO-packages in the cache, you can then copy the OO-packages (51 packages when installing OO en-US) to a new empty folder, maybe best on a USB-drive. Next, plug the USB-drive in the different machine. Open this folder on the USB-drive, where the OO-rpms are located. Press F4 to open a shell in this folder, become root (su -), and then use the command:

rpm -Uvh *.rpmto install OO on the other machine. This should work fine if no OO was installed before on the other machine.
Then close the konsole, safely unmount and remove the USB-drive. Plug the USB-drive to the next PC, etc.

Thank you pinoc for that detailed answer.  One more doubt-can GetOpenOffice work with the latest OO-3.1 files
from a local folder, assuming that the necessary files are downloaded ?

no, GOO will not work from a local folder because it is designed to get the files from the Internet. To install from a local folder, please follow the previously described steps. They should work fine, and once you have all needed files on a USB-drive you need just this one command to get OO installed on a new machine.
