update vlc, see here
or use the offline installer.

Well, it seems to me that this solution is not available for the masses not using testing.
Gonna cause many a sleepless night  ;D

Pinoc:

Quote
1b) Alternative offline installation:
LibreOffice 3.5.4 en_US packages plus installer for 32- and 64-bit can be downloaded from here:
- 32-bit, 157 mb, md5sum: a06ee1a48ad88128b1cd53cfaac39ca4
- 64-bit, 172 mb, md5sum: a532e8d8ef3ef2df59366a0e762e1b7a
Then follow these instructions on the new PC where you want to install LibreOffice:
a) if an older LibreOffice version is installed run lomanager and choose: Completely remove LibreOffice.
b) check in Synaptic that you have java-1.6.0-sun installed, if not, install it. Then close Synaptic.
c) copy the downloaded archive LO354_32bit.tar.gz or LO354_64bit.tar.gz into the user's Home directory, e.g., /home/Jim. Next, extract the archive via a GUI-application or using the following command in a terminal, e.g. for the 32bit version:
Code:
tar xfz LO354_32bit.tar.gz
You should now have a new directory LO-rpms in the user's Home directory, e.g., /home/Jim/LO-rpms
d) Open a terminal in the user's Home directory and enter (copy/paste) the following command:
Code:
/usr/bin/su -c 'LO-rpms/LO_OfflineInstall.sh'
provide your root-password, and wait for the final window showing 'LibreOffice is now installed' to appear.

This method of installation worked flawlessly, especially for a noob from windoze.

Regarding the update of the libdvbpsi5 I ignored it completely along with several others which caused Synaptic to stall and needed me to re-install PCLinuxOS several times over the past week.

Again thanks for this simple install of LibreOffice.

Kind regards

smudger,
You should never do partial upgrades. All or none. Doing partial upgrades will break your system sooner or later. When you have a situation as you describe, do a forum search to see if someone has posted about it. If you find nothing, post a new topic in the appropriate section. Give full and accurate details and information.

I just finished installing PCLinuxOS KDE4 2012.02 and did all the updates, but I cannot figure out how to get Libre Office installed.  Below is a recap of what I have tried to do and the convoluted/unsuccessful results I have seen so far:

1) Clicked on LibreOffice Manager
-- popup progress bar rolling: LibreOffice Manager (version 3.5.4)
-- reloading package information
-- testing if system is uptodate.
-- A popup box said: "Old startup script detected and deleted.
Please run LibreOffice Manager again.
If you get this message again:
a) as root: remove the file: /tmp/xsulomanager
b) as normal user: run LibreOffice Manager.
Exiting ... "          [OK]

2) Error message referred me to this file: lomanager-install.log
lomanager installation log file:
Tue Jun 26 11:57:35 MST 2012
lomanager-3.5.4-1pclos2012
louser joe
Detected webbrowser: /usr/bin/konqueror
UPDATETEST:  1
System uptodate
VTEST:  1
Java already installed
Downloading base-pack via wget . . . failed

Failed ??? What ???

3) Tried again, then got to (scroll to choose language) English (USA) [OK]
-- new popup: "Delete all downloaded lomanager RPM packages"
    (default YES in 15 seconds)
-- new popup: "Installing Java. Please be patient :)"
-- new popup: "Download and installation cancelled.
Please use the offline-installer described in important
    Notes 1b in the lomanager-thread

4) Next, the system tried to open forum topic 59009 with Konqueror . . . but that would not work.  Konqueror said: "Requested operation could not be completed" Unknown host.  I have a good internet connection and Firefox works.

Why doesn't Konqueror work?

5) So, I opened topic 59009 with Firefox and saw 51 pages of notes to read.  Wow!

Within the many thousands of words, I found this highlighted in red
Quick Instructions:
-> install the latest version (3.5.4, see last post in this thread)
-> run: PCmenu -> Office -> LibreOffice Manager
-> read the messages in the popup-windows, they are provided for a reason.
-> read the Important notes in this post, they are constantly updated and contain additional useful information for a successful installation of LibreOffice.
-> LibreOffice Manager will download LibreOffice and related files (Help, language packs) from LibreOffice. When a new LibreOffice version is available you will have to run LibreOffice LibreOffice Manager again to update to the latest LibreOffice version.

What a wild goose-chase!

Libre Office doesn't work.
Libre Office "Manager" doesn't work.
Konqueror doesn't work.

What do I need to do to get Libre Office installed and working
and also to get Konqueror to work?

PS: Did the synaptic reload again. Everything is up to date.
Checked for lomanager and found it is installed and up to date,
but it apparently does not work.

I ran into that once before, too. Following the instructions was of no use. Open your file manager. Unhide all files. Open the .config folder in your home directory. In the .config folder, delete or rename any libreoffice and/or .libreoffice folders. Run the installer again.

@djohnston,
these instructions are useful, else I wouldn't provide them ::) If you get this message again and only in that case, then do as instructed. Most likely you will not get that message again because lomanager already takes care of the issue but just in case, these are the steps to follow.

@joseppi,
if you read the provided messages then you should understand what went wrong, or? You ran lomanager several times in very short intervals and that is why
Quote
"Old startup script detected and deleted.
Please run LibreOffice Manager again.
Just do that.

Next, The download via wget failed, because the LibreOffice server had a timeout, no problem on our but on their side, and what is unclear about the error message? Nothing.

Next, the user was impatient and cancelled the installation procedure with the resulting message:
Quote
"Installing Java. Please be patient "
-- new popup: "Download and installation cancelled.
Please use the offline-installer described in important
    Notes 1b in the lomanager-thread

No one asked you to read 51 pages but instead Please use the offline-installer described in important Notes 1b in the lomanager-thread. Unfortunately it seems that thousand words are still not enough to explain how things work.

Peter,

I did follow those instructions. Else, I could not have said they did not work. I am simply relaying to the poster what I did in the same situation to be able to install LibreOffice in a fresh installation.

They probably didn't work because lomanager had already applied them/adjusted the situation. These steps should only be needed in very rare cases (if lomanager was executed within a very short time as root and as user) if lomanager for whatever reason fails to apply these steps. Anyway, to my knowledge the script works ok  ;)

LibreOffice Calc Performance Improvements Project - Thursday, July 12, 2012

Improved ODS Load Times

Test 2 used an ODS file with a single sheet containing 5,230 rows and 189 columns of matrix cells with complex formulas.  LibreOffice 3.5.4 takes 26 seconds to load this file, and LibreOffice 3.7 takes 13 seconds.  That's 13 seconds quicker which is a 50% reduction in load time!

lomanager 3.6.0-1 coming to your repo in a week or whenever they make it final.
Following the tradition to release the latest RC as final you can already install 3.6.0 with the updated offline installers as outlined in the original post under 1b) Alternative offline installation:

I tried the alternate install method for the first time & all went very smooth.
Excellent install guide.
My only problem; some download trouble.
I tried kget - it couldn't get the file,
downthemall firefox plugin failed at random points with 404 file error. Wouldn't resume.
In the end I just used FF download, had one failure at 120mb, wouldn't resume. 2nd attempt with FF was success. I am in a far-flung country so my problem was network problem.
Also, the menu entries for LO3.5 were not removed & had to be removed manually. Not sure if lomanager>remove LO was supposed to do that. Not a big problem.
Thanks pinoc, LO3.6 is cool.
