I'm having a bit of trouble with GetOpenOffice.  When I run it form the menu, it asks for the root password and then nothing appears to happen.  So I tried running it from a console and this is what I get:
Code: [Select]
[chuck@localhost ~]$ getopenoffice
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyWarning: This program is an suid-root program or is being run by the root user.
The full text of the error or warning message cannot be safely formatted
in this environment. You may get a more descriptive message by running the
program as a non-root user or by removing the suid bit on the executable.
xterm Xt error: Can't open display: %s
zenity found
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
(zenity:30224): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
/var/cache/apt/archives/partial found
freebsd available
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
(zenity:30254): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
(zenity:30255): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

What is this magic cookie?  Everything is up to date....   :(

Can you please let me know which version and which window manager you are using? Looks to me you are logged in from a different machine, cause of the error: cannot open display: 0.0, the program works but you don't get the graphic dialog fields.

Try this:
- open a konsole as normal user and enter: xhost +
- next enter the command: kdesu getopenoffice  (if you do not use KDE then enter: gksu getopenoffice)

if this still does not work then login to the root account and run getopenoffice from there.

let me know,

good luck,
-p.

I'm running the standard KDE 3.whatever that is - fully updated from the PASS repo.

Code: [Select]
[chuck@localhost ~]$ xhost +
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host

Not sure what that means...  everything else seems to work fine.

that message just means that others can now access your X-server. Don't know why you needed that but if it works now and OO is installed you can set it back to before using the command: xhost -
or it is automatically reset when you logout or reboot the next time.

so if OO is working ok now, then all is fine!
have a nice day!

I don't know either, since GetOpenOffice asked for my root password (and I gave it).  Seems that sould be enough.  But, anyway, it worked and OpenOffice is now fine.   :D

Thanks a million for the quick, and patient, help.   ;)

I know it's not a business of GOO but is there way to install only OOo components which I need?
I mean only Writer or only Writer and Calc. If GOO would support this multiple option it would be great.

hi pstranger,

due to the OO-packaging structure GOO will always install the entire OO-suite. However, once installed you can simply start Synaptic and remove any OO-component (writer, calc, impress, draw, math) you do not want to have. Please be aware of two things if you remove a OO-component:
1. a removed OO-component will no longer be listed in Synaptic so you can not add it back later but need to use GOO to reinstall everything (or temporarily setup the OO-repo section)
2. the individual OO-components use only little disk-space. The vast amount of the OO-required disk-space is used by the OO-core packages which will remain in the system if you remove a OO-component.

hope this helps,
-p.

Seems like the best solution is to remove no needed items from menu, is it?

yes, if you just want to 'hide' them from the menu but still have them available if needed.  :)

Hi Slax,

can not replicate this problem. If you still have this issue, and trying to find the source of it, could you please try running in a konsole:
a) as normal user: kdesu getopenoffice  (or gksu getoppenoffice   if you do not use KDE)
b) as root: getopenoffice

and report the results here?

thanks,
-p.

Well i found where the problem was (in my case)

I ran the script from terminal (without kdesu) as normal user, it asked for root pass and the error occurred.
Using the command 'kdesu getopenoffice' as normal user everything works...

Maybe the same mistake TheChief made?

thanks for the reply, it's not a mistake but a problem with a sudo-launcher

kdesu (or gksu if not KDE) getopenoffice works ok.

'getopenoffice' without kdesu should invoke 'consolehelper' without having to distinguish if you are on KDE or a Gnome-based WM. The problem is with the the initialization of the launcher not with the script itself. This only seems to happen on KDE3, the launcher works fine on KDE4.  We hope to find a solution soon.  ;)
Until then use: kdesu getopenoffice

Many thanks for GOO and for this thread!  I was having some trouble with OpenOffice (Help didn't work, etc.) and did a search here on the forum and came across this thread.  GOO seemed like a great idea, but it didn't work!

So I had to read all the way to the end of the thread.    ;D

Problem solved with kdesu getopenoffice.

This only seems to happen on KDE3, the launcher works fine on KDE4.
...

Uh, oh!  I'm beginning to hear the drumbeat that will soon have us all marching towards KDE 4.  I have great hopes for KDE 4, but right now to me it's kinda like Gnome.  I look at it and wonder "What do I do now?  And where's all my stuff???"   :P

Problems Starting GetOpenOffice
« Reply #59 on: September 15, 2009, 05:28:19 AM »
Hi there, I am having problems starting getopenoffice. A little background info first.

I have recently been having problems with my setup, some programs would work for some users but not others and also my hdd was not partitioned satisfactorily, so I decided to do a complete reinstall.

I backed up the important data and the prime users /home directory, then I re-partitioned my hdd and reinstalled pclinuxos using the latest iso.

I am now back on line, have reinstalled all the backed up data and I have reinstated my pass server sources.list and have completely updated all packages that were available. Everything seems to be working fine, except...... I cant run getopenoffice, not from the menu or from the konsole

When it starts it asks for the root password which I enter and then a smal,l window flashes on the screen and then disappears. The text in the window says something about 'testing internal connections' but its gone too quick to read. It cant be due to lack of space cos my / partition has 16Gb free.

Running from the konsole, as root, gives:

[root@linuxlaptop me]# getopenoffice
zenity found
/var/cache/apt/archives/partial found

and then nothing happens. I have tried renaming /var/cache/apt/archives/partial to see if that helped but it doesnt.

So I tried to manually add the new repo to synaptic like so:

ftp://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/pub/os/Linux/distr/texstar/openoffice/apt/
pclinuxos/2009
openoffice

but when try to download the package information synaptic stalls and closing the download window gives:

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

I have searched the forums but nothing comes up similar to this.

Any help appreciated before I download direct from the OO website
