ok all ... one bug .... when it installs the taskbar icon permissions are set for guest ....

to resolve this ...

right click the icon and select properties ... it will choose home as default ...

click ok to theis and close

this will fix the permission issue

I downloaded the beta and installed it on a test box with the following:
amd athlon 64 3200+
1 gig ddr @400 mhz memory
128 mb nvidia fx 5200 video
80 gig maxtor ata 100 hardrive
realtek sound.

Aside from the bug you mentioned the only one I have found is that sometime it will take the log in information and some times it won't. This appears to be random and I have replaced the keyboard a couple of times to see if that was the problem. I will do a clean reinstall to see if it is corrected. Other than that I like the system and it is very fast. Every thing appears to be well intergrated  and the install was painless and smooth. I will keep you posted if anything else arises. It is a job well done.

Additionnally, it seems that it can't be localised to french... (with addlocale) what's wrong exactly ?

As an experience, I did a xfce4 version in a virtual machine, taking the french remaster I did as a base, installed task-xfce, removed all kde, (replaced kdm by gdm) and it's almost all in french.

Based on the final release (pclinuxos-phoenix-2009.4.iso) and a hard drive install I discovered addlocale is broken:

• wget is NOT installed by default
• addlocale expected /usr/sbin/wget, but wget is installed as /usr/bin/wget

Quick workaround (execute both steps as root):

• apt-get install wget
• ln -s /usr/bin/wget /usr/sbin/wget

Maybe addlocale complains about (2 or more) entries in /etc/apt/sources.lst. Disable these entries temporary (add # in front of line), but leave at least one repo entry!

Now addlocale should work as expected

As aasche says, two repositories are enabled by default.
Isn't that against the frequent suggestions around the forum, or is there a reason for it being so?

some general comments and suggestions for Kori for the next Phoenix

wget:
It is correct that wget is missing and needed to run addlocale. addlocale uses wget but does not expect /usr/sbin/wget (wget should not be there anyway). Once wget is installed addlocale works fine.
Kori: could we have wget included in the next version?

Repos:
The second enabled repo in Phoenix is the OO-repo which can but should not be enabled. If enabled you can use it to install OO, yet it is advised to use GetOpenOffice for any OO-related task because you can use GOO not only to (re-)install but also to fix or remove OO. The last two tasks can not be done via Synaptic (plus GOO provides a nicer interface  )
Kori: maybe the next Phoenix version could no longer have the freebsd OO-repo and possibly also not the ibiblio repo?

GetOpenOffice:
unfortunately the current Phoenix has the outdated GetOpenOffice-Gnome (version 0.3). Installing and running the current GetOpenOffice version (1.1) works fine.
Kori: probably the present GetOpenOffice version (1.1) was not found because the name is different to GetOpenOffice-Gnome. The previous Gnome and KDE specific version were merged by Tex into a WM-agnostic GetOpenOffice installer package. Please note that installing GOO 1.1 will not replace the old GOO-Gnome, so uninstall it first. After the update, the shortcut in the Utilities folder needs to be changed from /usr/bin/GetOpenOffice-GNOME to /usr/bin/getopenoffice. Could you also please add an entry for GOO under PCmenu -> System -> Configuration ?

Writing from Phoenix in live mode . . . looks like a lot of work went in since I tried an RC or beta some months ago. Overall impression favourable.

One problem I found was that Mousepad died suddenly as soon as I clicked on save - only half an hour's work down the gurgler. No Save dialogue window, just all gone. This was on a ThinkPad R51 with Intel 82852/855GM video. Gedit doesn't appear to suffer from this problem. Never seen similar behaviour with Mousepad in other distros. Running in live mode.

The other difficulty I have encountered is that when browsing the web some sites display in text so pale it is near impossible to read. See attempter.wordpress.com for example, or the comments on Daily Telegraph articles.

A wee bit of choice on the themes front would be good for those not completely sold on the black look. Black on black is hard to read.

Use an oxygen theme with slightly translucent menu bars... it will be much more readable. Black is hard to read and looks hideous!

I also am having trouble in hotmail when reply to a message I can't see the text I am replying to or my type in the body of the email. I can read all email, only when reply or compose new. Chrome seems a bit better. Messed with various settings and to no avail.
Other than this, still feeling my way around. I do love the dark theme, just certain areas the text is nearly invisible. Great work.

The Application Shortcut dialog is not populated with pre-defined keyboard actions and therefore keyboard shortcuts for applications (such as screen locking) can not be defined.
