how to mess with the cpu ?
« on: May 12, 2009, 12:42:17 AM »
Is there a way to use overclocking without using software (can't find any in repo) or changing BIOS settings (impossible on my Compaq)?

I am seeing stuff like:

echo p4_clockmod | tee -a /etc/modules
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq

Any way to mess with /etc/sysfs.conf or other native settings to boost CPU on my old rig?

I don't care if it blows up...

How can I change BIOS setting for USB? It only set for floppy, hard disk or CD drive. I want to run Live CD on flash stick.

Some BIOS don't have that capacity, others only show the USB options if there is a USB stick or hard drive plugged in before checking the BIOS options. Try plugging the stick in before turning the puter on, then check the BIOS options again.

Post ya PC spec here - someone will help.
Ya really want to look at the firmware - for either overclocking which is dumb, or BIOS.
There is a piece on new BIOS settings over on the software discussions sector also.

Found some Mobo's that only support USB floppy. If you want to boot from USB they should be formatted as FAT not FAT32. Made some working PCLinuxOS 2009 KDE and Gnome USB with help of (Windows)Unetbootin an HP USB Format.
Standard (working) Live USB created with "Make LiveUSB" or "Gtk Live Install" did not work with those Mobo's.

(Hope some dev's get Unetbootin working for PCLos)

My specs r an old Compaq 1.7GHz P4 786 RAM which came with Windows 2000.

I don't have any USB and I heard the BIOS was locked.

I don't suppose it makes a difference if the question was over your head.

And you will notice the thread has been moved to a more appropriate section of the forum, because AndrzejL's question was obviously over your head.  ;D

Hi,

You could type in console a command to see cpu's capabilities, such as:

Code: [Select]
$cat /proc/cpuinfo
eventually, compare with the cpu section given in a "lshw" command (run as root for this one)

Then, see also in lshw what it says about the bios version (if gives correct informations) and check if a new version for the bios would not be available (sometimes very good to flash a bios, to get more configuration options in that bios)

I am seeing stuff like:

Quote
echo p4_clockmod | tee -a /etc/modules
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq

Any way to mess with /etc/sysfs.conf or other native settings to boost CPU on my old rig?

To answer precisely to this, you may want to ask to some Linux hardware forum section. More advanced overclockers there I suppose.  :D

The answer, I'm surprised no-one has answered, is NO!!  You can't!!  Compaq don't facilitate it..

It's really a stupid thing to do anyway..  You'd probably only fry something on the board..

If you wish to overclock, buy a MB / Processor combo that was designed for overclocking..  Get plenty of info before even entering the bios as one wrong move could melt the cpu into it's socket..

RAM has to be of excellent quality, as does the graphics card as you're increasing the voltages sent to these also..

Many hard disks will corrupt when overclocked..

Again, it's a stupid thing to do to a computer..  I wouldn't advise it unless you've got money to burn..

Cheers,
