Re: PCLOS constantly crashing!!!
« Reply #15 on: November 02, 2009, 10:52:23 PM »
I know this is an old post, but rather than starting a new post thought I would add to it.

Anyway this problem has never completely gone away although it did appear to happen less and less. Unfortunately I wasn't very got at running the output from top to a text file to catch what was happening during a crash so failed to catch it and then learn to live with the problem. Now though the crashes are occurring more often and the other day I had the top output directed to a text file. The file is rather huge (over 3,000 lines), but the last few inputs are shown below.

Unfortunately I can't make a lot of sense from it or see what the problem is. Strangely enough the system crashed AGAIN today, but unlike other times I didn't even have time to open a program - as the desktop was loaded the fan revved up and the system became unresponsive. Any ideas anyone?

coffetime - sorry for not including everything. Here are my specs:

Fully updated KDE3 system (from fresh install of Minime 2009)
No special effects like compiz enabled
Video card - Intel 945GM/GMS
Driver - Intel 810 and later
In system services (in PCC) ACPI is enabled, but can't see APIC - perhaps that wasn't what you meant though?

Output from cpufreq-info:

Code: [Select]
cpufrequtils 005: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2006
Report errors and bugs to cpufreq@vger.kernel.org, please.
analyzing CPU 0:
  driver: acpi-cpufreq
CPUs which need to switch frequency at the same time: 0
  hardware limits: 800 MHz - 1.73 GHz
available frequency steps: 1.73 GHz, 1.33 GHz, 1.06 GHz, 800 MHz
available cpufreq governors: ondemand, conservative, powersave, userspace, performance
current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 1.73 GHz.
The governor "ondemand" may decide which speed to use
                  within this range.
current CPU frequency is 800 MHz.

Hope that sheds some light on things.....

cpufreq-info looks ok. Regarding APIC:

Quote
PCLinuxOS Control Center  (Configure your computer) -> Boot -> Setup the Boot System

Click the Advanced button
UnCheck Enable Local APIC
UnCheck Enable APIC
Click Ok
Click Next
Click Finish
Reboot

Local APIC is not enabled. In the advanced section, only SMP is enabled....

Ok so crashes have now decided to become more frequent, like everyday frequent.... Obviously this is driving me nuts. Caught another crash on top (see below). Should I reinstall everything? Upgrade to KDE4 (need to check if I can get kmymoney to run on KDE4 though)....

Any other ideas????

If it was me,one crash, try and sort it, second crash i'd be re-installing, you've had the problem for some time, i couldn't last that long, i'll give you 10 out of 10 for persistence. ;)

Hi, dj_bridges,

I'm sorry to hear that your system is crashing more often. I can't help with that, unfortunately, but I can point you to this thread on KDE 4 and KMyMoney:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,65260.0.html
"kmymoney for KDE4."

According to muungwana and Animal, it's not possible to run KMM on KDE 4 in PCLOS. Sorry for the bad news ... I'm bummed out, too and need to think of alternative apps (Skrooge? GnuCash?) until KMM is ported to KDE 4.

maybe a crazy idea, can you switch off "ondemand" maybe the programs are too intense if the cpu is running at 800Mhz, just a thought.

Sorry for being a bit slow coolbreeze, but where can I switch off the ondemand setting? Have looked through Kpowersave, but can't find it anywhere.

Will go for a reinstall later today... (not so much persistence as get pulled away to do something else ;-) ;) ) Having said that am a bit concerned that an update will screw the system as I want to stay with KDE3 for now, for the kmymoney reason (am itching to get into kde4, but will have to wait)....

The "ondemand" is at /etc/modprobe.preload.d open with "kwrite" (or your prefered editor) to comment it out, you need to be root, but you know that already. hope it works for you, other wise a re-install is called for, if you still get crashes after that, then i would look at your hardware.

EDIT: Just been for the link for your money one, but i see you've been there already.

Just wanted to let you all know that this seems to be an intractable problem in KDE4. I have now tried LXDE, e17 and XFCE DE and none of them crash. interestingly the system crashed during a skype call and the cound was completely unaffected. It therefore seems that the linux kernel is up and running fine, but that for some reason it stops communicating with the keyboard or screen.

Seems a shame to leave KDE4, but I have been getting 3 or 4 crashes a day minimum and I can't put up with it any longer. Will try a reinstall when the PCLOS KDE4 iso comes out, but until then I'll be on another DE....

Thanks for all the helpful comments..... Still willing to try anything else if anyone has a brainwave.

I would suggest reseating the memory modules and then doing a memory test .....

Well over time I have tried everything suggested and nothing has helped. So I started playing round with different DE, anyway to cut a long story short after DLing lots of DE, I noticed that there was the option to log into KDE-openbox. I tried it and lo and behold I was in KDE4 and so far it had not crashed once. This must mean that the problem lies with Kwin. Unfortunately thats as much as I can say, but just in case anyone else is having the same issue - try KDE with openbox......
