This thread works for MFC210C, DCP-115C, DCP-120C, DCP-315CN, DCP-340CW, MFC-215C, MFC-425CN, MFC-640CW, MFC-820CW:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many thanks to gman and edukator for originally raising and solving this, all I have done is (a) had the opportunity to test it and (b) set it out in a single post.

Due to a bug in "kpackage", you have to do this procedure as a user, not as root, inserting the root password where necessary.

In order to install the Brother Drivers for one of these printers you have to go to this page to get them:

http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/download_prn.html#MFC-210C

Download the two RPM files onto your desktop.

Now open synaptic and install these two packages if not already installed:

tcsh
kdeadmin-kpackage

Next, from the start menu, select "Run Command" and the command you need to type in should be exactly as follows including the quotes:

kdesu "kwrite /etc/profile.d/10mandriva-release.csh"

Click "Run". You will be prompted for the root password, then an editor with some text in will pop up. The last line reads:

setenv META_CLASS $META_CLASS

Just remove the last bit so it now reads:

setenv META_CLASS

You can now save the change and exit that editor.

You are now ready to install the Brother drivers. Click on one of the two RPM files you just downloaded. KPackage will run. Move the KPackage window so you can see the other RPM file, and drag and drop that onto the KPackage window. A further window will pop up, just "cancel" it. Now you will see both the RPM files listed in the left hand pane. Click on the tiny circle on both of the lines so a green tick shows, and at the bottom click Install Marked. A second window will pop up, click Install on that as well. You will be prompted for the root password, then the packages will be installed. You should see a value "0" returned which means no error. You can now exit out of both windows to close KPackage.

Finally you need to run the PCLinuxOS Control Centre > Hardware > Set Up Printers. If the printer is not detected automatically, find Brother MFC-210C in the list of printers and follow through to install.

Hi Davecs and thank you for doing this for me.

Note: tcsh was already installed so I reinstalled it.

I made it all the way down to "You will be prompted for the root password, then the packages will be installed. You should see a value "0" returned which means no error. You can now exit out of both windows to close KPackage." ..... except that I wasn't prompted for the Root Password ..... instead I got a popup window headed "Login Problem: Please Login Manually" and a prompt "[root@localhost ~]# "

Note: I am logged in as Root. Is this correct???

I entered "login root" and was prompted for "Password:" ...... But when I enter the Password, nothing happens!

Where did I go wrong?

Edit: I re-booted the PC and Logged in as my (non-Root) Username. I then resumed your procedure from "You are now ready to install the Brother drivers. Click on one of the two RPM files you just downloaded. ........"

SUCCESS.  Printed a very pretty Test page in glorious colour. Thank You soooooo much.

Do you need any more detail from me to tidy up the procedure?

No that's it. On the way, you also discovered that there is a bug in KPackage whereby it calls for the root password if you run it as a user, but if you try running it as root, it doesn't work! I'll add that to the solution.

OK Joble, I found it again..... must be Magic.

Davecs, Glad that you managed to find the cause of the anomaly I encountered. I will copy the finslised solution to my archive for the next time I load PCLinuxOS.

Thank you to all of you who helped me get there. I am now working on the solution to my Wireless problem with Hootiegibbon.

Davecs what happened?  Wheel_Nut has lost this thread.  HEHE, never mind.  I think I know what happened.   ;D

You can't delete the first post of a topic, so I had to split it then delete the original topic. If wheel_nut kept a direct link, it would have changed.

@dasduffer

Actually gman and edukator are more responsible for this than I am. All I did was to test it as my girlfriend had the printer, then set out the instructions in a more friendly manner.

Hi,

I had to install the drivers for my all in one Brother DCP330C by hand, for the printer as well as for the scanner. Shouln't I ask for some packages for my model in the package request section ?

You can use the drivers here instead: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/download_prn.html#DCP-330C

I doubt the instructions will be all that much different.

Thanks davecs,

I know that allready, my printer was configured a long time ago. (installed with rpm Uvh package.rpm command line).

I was just suggesting that it might be nice to have an additional printer brand available from within the PCC printer conf section ?

OK now a problem. My girlfriend's printer has stopped working in Linux. Works in Windows. I have tried un- and re-installing the drivers etc. In the KDE Control Centre > Peripherals > Printers the "jobs" tab the job shows it is Processing and the printer says it is receiving data, but the process never completes and the printing never quite happens. I have also tried running the live CD, and whilst live, installing tcsh and and the Brother drivers, and printing from there, but that doesn't work either.

All the usual stuff, turning unit off/on, disconnecting USB, unplugging power and switching on again, nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have any ideas?

OK Fixed it myself. Maybe it was an upgrade, but as the Brother printer is an external rpm settings changed. Went into KDE Control Centre > Peripherals > Printers, went into Administrator mode, and on the Properties tab selected the Drivers icon, which showed that it was installed as a "Raw Printer"! I clicked on the "Change..." button and was able to revert it to the Brother MFC-210C driver. Now it works fine. It's taken me two weeks to figure that out!!

Hope this may be of help to someone else...  ;)

Hi All
Can this guide be used for a Brother DCP135C? its not for me but for a friend I convinced to switch to Linux ( PCLOS). I will have to instruct him over the phone.
Really want to get this printer working for him as it's taken ages for him to actually trust using Linux. So far he really like PCLinuxOS ....
Thanks
Steve
