quick update as I promised to have a new version ready by this weekend. The last week I worked fulltime on this one and it was ready to go Friday evening but just then came the change with Openoffice, so I must wait until we have a stable repo situation wrt OO. New features with respect to version 1.6:
* MANY more applications are now translated. Many GTK applications were missed before but now a new approach detects virtually all translatable packages.
* completely rewritten modular structure: part 1 - locale-specific requirements; part2 - locale-specific apps to be reinstalled
* ported to other WM: addlocale now also works on Gnome, Openbox, XFCE, fluxbox, etc.
* improved tests to ensure the system is uptodate before starting the localization
* added 'recursive comparison check' to minimize the amount of packages need for the translation

While waiting for the new OO, I will test yet another conceptual approach which could reduce the amount of packages to reinstall to one (1)  . If this will work, adding a new locale can be achieved in less than 2-3 minutes....

By the way, yesterday I noticed that apt messages in konsole are still in english. Do you think that could also be modified with your new coming version ?

with the new version all konsole messages, and MUCH more, are in French,

New version addlocale 1.7: up to version 1.6 only 'essential' programs were changed. The idea was to continuously extend this list and consequently reduce the number of missed packages. However, this approach could never provide a complete list as I had no idea how to get a complete list. Starting with 1.7 this has changed and we now have a complete list for each locale. We can now use this new list and check the system for translatable packages resulting in a notable increase of newly localized applications.

Changelog wrt 1.6:
1. a new separate procedure detects all translatable packages for a given locale using the information of the entire repo (14GB).  The result of this procedure are locale-specific lists of potentially translatable packages.  These lists have been included in addlocale 1.7.
2. a 'recursive comparison check' matches the system-available applications against the list of potentially translatable applications and filters out only those which are needed to apply the localization.  In addition, existing packages are detected and re-used leaving only the missing packages to be downloaded.
3. as a direct result of the points 1 and 2 above, MANY more (mostly GTK) applications are now translated.
4. completely rewritten modular structure using locale-specific settings: part 1 - general requirements (fonts, etc); part2 - reinstalling applications providing languages for the selected locale.
5. as a result of this new modular structure addlocale can now also be applied to other WM and was tested successfully for KDE, Gnome, Openbox, XFCE, Fluxbox, LXDE.
6. improved tests to ensure the system is uptodate before starting the localization, Synaptic/Smart are closed, you are on a PCLinuxOS system, ...
7. Important: addlocale 1.7 will use the new localized builds of go-Openoffice. It will check for, and if necessary add, the new openoffice repo to your Synaptic sources.list.  However, I strongly suggest you do this yourself before running addlocale 1.7.  If you have not yet done so, these are the steps to add the new openoffice repo:
- make sure Synaptic is closed
- open a shell as normal user and copy/paste the following at the command prompt in the shell:

- start Synaptic, click the button Reload, when finished click the button Mark All Upgrades, and finally the button Apply.  After all has finished nicely, close Synaptic.
- run addlocale 1.7: Start -> System -> Configuration -> Add Locale

If you have run addlocale 1.6 before I suggest to nevertheless run addlocale 1.7 in order to have even more applications in the new locale.  Yet, please realize that the new version 1.7 includes major changes and many new features.  While I tried my best to test all kind of combinations of WM, KDE-GNOME installs, locales, system settings, etc. I can not guarantee that all is perfect.  Please use it at your own risk and let me know if you have any issues.

Hello !

I'm very happy about this new addlocale. I just ran it following pinoc's explanations, and addlocale installed 8 additional packages then reinstalled 89 packages.

Some (basic) questions come to me:

- Will it be necessary to run addlocale when installing new X applications ?
- What about the menus that are still in english ? Such as the Search field in the main menu, is written "Search", "Leave" is written "leave" instead of "Quitter", "favorites" instead of "Favoris", "Computer", "History"...  "logout" instead of "se déconnecter" and others. Is it possible to contribute to get more menus in french, and isn't it too complicated to do so ?

@deBaas: great to hear it works fine! I believe the odf-converter was only compatible with the previous OO-version you had, but if I'm not mistaken then the new goo-OO-3.0.1 from the new 'openoffice' section already includes the functionality of odf-converter? I think you can import docx with the new go-OO3.0.1.

@melodie: good to hear you got some more applications in French now, in fact French is the most translated language, closely followed by German. I'm pretty sure that addlocale 1.7 detects 99.9% of what can be transferred into the new locale (addlocale 1.6 covered ~ 70%, depending on how many GTK-applications were installed into KDE). Meaning you now have the maximum possible. Please also note that the root account has quite some menus in English although the same menus are in French in a normal user account, e.g. the Home-folder is always called Home in the root account but not so in a normal user account. I found this out only recently and believe this is done on purpose to allow administering a system even if you are not familiar with a non-English language. If you want to get more in French you need to start translating the menus and more, meaning setting up/modifying the so-called mo/po-files for a given application. Please check the localization project http://mypclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?board=47.0 for more details on how to achieve this.

Version 1.8 changelog:
- restore to en_US now also restores OO3-en-US
- improved testing that package managers are closed (and included kpackage)
- the separate OO3-repo needed for the localized builds will now only be used during script execution, so as before, you can/should have only one repo enabled, see also: http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=54836.msg452315#msg452315
- information on how to get locale-specific OO3 dictionaries (if available) are now in the document 'getOOdictionary.txt' on your desktop instead of in /tmp where it could have been deleted after a reboot

- OO3 specific remark: please note that any OO3-locale added to the system will be available in OO3. Independent of the current system language you can select the OO3 locale from the OO3 Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Languages User Interface tab

Version 1.8 is a maintenance release. If you used version 1.7 to change your localization then there is no need to run version 1.8 again. it gives me the error:
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

so I can't finish updating, and when i go to addlocal, it says my system is not up to date and run package manager...
using addlocal 1.7 because I can't find 1.8 in the repositories

version 1.8 was just submitted yesterday and should appear in the repo within the next 1 or 2 days.

- if you used addlocale 1.7 before successfully then there is no need to run the new version 1.8.
- if you used addlocale 1.6 or earlier: version 1.7 was a huge change and will result in many more applications showing up in the new locale. So if you want to profit from these changes you could either run 1.7 now, or better just wait 1-2 days and then use the new version 1.8.

with respect to the error you described: please note that this is a separate repo in order to get the new localized builds for OpenOffice3. This repo should only be used temporarily and in addition to your single normal repo; addlocale 1.7/1.8 will do this automatically but if you want to do it yourself now you should carefully read and follow the instructions given by Tex here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=54836.msg452315#msg452315. Please also note the OpenOffice 3 (OO3)-specific remark in my previous post, meaning you can then have OO in any locale you installed, regardless of the system language, which is what you wanted initially, correct?

Hi,

For my part, on the laptop where I have PCLOS 2009 as well as on the desktop, all broke in pieces yesterday. I'm not even sure I did anything wrong at all, and now there is no hostname, no root, nothing left to repair. It's a new install, I'll reinstall. (Gnome version maybe, I kind of like it).

What I did : try to install addlocale 1.7 and use it. After installing it, I closed Synaptic and started addlocale, then it told me "system not up to date" ; then came to the forum to see again the command line to add OOo to the repos, then I met with a first error when I started Synaptic : it told me the OOo line was activated two times, so I deselected one of the two lines, then reloaded.

Then I saw I would have a quite a long download, for this reason I decided to uninstall all OOo and myspell dictionaries. It did uninstall one more package (don't remember which one but could find easily in the apt-log I believe)

I also decided to uninstall nv xorg driver too, which uninstalled two more packages (x11-task or so and another)

I can post the error messages somewhere if you want. That is the only thing I could do after I had upgraded : copy/paste the messages in nano, and save it. So I could get it by mounting PCLOS from another distro.
