changes in addlocale version 1.6:
- fix: the shortcut in /Desktop/Utilities/ to point to the correct location
- fix: remove old version /usr/bin/addlocale
- fix: kdeglobals could have more than one locale, now it has only one locale
- fix: new locale for kaffeine is now properly displayed

- new: log-files for each step. If an error should occur, the user will be informed and the corresponding log-file can be used to debug the problem
- new: detection and informing about an invalid Synaptic configuration
- new: more applications are checked for applying the new locale

Hi!

I tried this version. It changed the color of my window titelbars from black to the default blue. K9copy is still in english and American english is the only language available in "Switch application language...". Synaptic is still in english instead of swedish.

can verify that synaptic is still in English while trying to make a Swedish remaster for friends ...that's using the addlocale 1.6-1 on the 2009.1 ........and tried all mentioned tricks..

I just ran addlocale for Swedish. There are no problems, you will get the maximum possible 
But please note point 1 in the OP, or more specific: the directory /usr/share/locale/sv/LC_MESSAGES contains all available translations for the programs currently installed on your system. Compared to for example German (/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES), I can see that there is no Swedish translation available for Synaptic as well as k9copy (<=> there is no 'synaptic.mo' file) and for this reason they are still in English. Which makes me wonder how Antje managed to get Synaptic in Swedish... 

Uggla, the color change in the windows title bar has nothing to do with addlocale but is probably caused by an updated package which was pulled in when updating the system.

You can choose to download a mo-file or a po-file. What is the difference? Do I need both?

Hi,

I discovered this thread too late, after I changed the locales the hard and old fashioned way, using the page instructions of the Documentation page, linked from the main page.

I just read this whole thread, and about Openoffice.org, I installed the locale with the l10n package  (my language is french). So as I see someone had problems with OOo not translated after running addlocale, I wanted to ask : does addlocale take the l10n-lang files too ?

Else : I installed firefox-fr and now firefox is in french.

Else : I reinstalled a lot of stuff, Synaptic, Draketool and so (Configuration center). Does it blow it up all if I start addlocale after a good upgrade now ?

Else : how come I get a list of upgrades when reloading Synaptic on the irish or the swiss mirror, and not from the texan (spoutl) mirror ?

thanks for the help but as said in the original post, addlocale supports 73 different locales and Brazilian Portuguese surely has always been included there.  You probably used the outdated old version under /usr/bin/. Please follow the instructions outlined in the original post, install the latest version of addlocale using Synaptic, and then run addlocale from the menu: Start -> System -> Configuration -> Add Locale. You can then choose 'Portuguese (Brazil)'.  Addlocale 1.6 will also apply the fixes outlined in the changelog, so please always use the latest version.

@Uggla, I can't download because I'm not registered there, but is it correct to simply put the missing synaptic.mo file into the directory /usr/share/locale/sv/LC_MESSAGES and then restarting Synaptic shows it in Swedish? I believe that should be it, right?  If so, then this could be the solution to get other applications showing in the new locale. Yet, I will not go through 73 languages and browse the net for potential missing mo-files for all kind of applications 

@ scoundrel: as said, the amount of translations strongly depends on the chosen locale, some of them are virtually 100% (German (KDE homeland), French, Spanish,...), some of them medium, and some only marginal. Addlocale only applies what is there already. You can get a rough idea on the degree of translatability here: http://l10n.kde.org/stats/gui/stable/team/

@samuelbh: thanks for the reply. For addlocale I have the following hopes, it should
- provide an easy solution to switch the desktop & system locale (obvious)
- help spreading PCLOS into the non-English community
- easily make available what has been there all the time because addlocale only applies already existing translations
- honor, and hopefully stimulate further, the fantastic work of all the translators
- serve as a starter for a localized remaster by always downloading the very latest localized programs and without the need to provide all kind of additional files on the CD/DVD, which after some time would be outdated anyway.
- finally, get your feedback in order to improve the script and make it better for the good of all the above 

@melody: Just install addlocale via Synaptic and run it, it can only get better...    OO and much more will be in French. If you are in Europe please use the European mirror servers, the Irish, Dutch, and Swiss servers are very fast.

The Synaptic mo-file I downloaded was named sv_LC_MESSAGES_synaptic.mo. I renamed it synaptic.mo and copied it to /usr/share/locale/sv/LC_MESSAGES. When I then started Synaptic it was in swedish!

Why not take advantage of the translation work done by the Ubuntu guys? Just download the Ubuntu language pack above. It includes mo-files for a lot of applications and languages, and it is updated regularily.

just figured out how to do and apply all missing mo-files to get Synaptic, k9copy, etc into Swedish or other languages. Now I need to think about a smart solution to provide all these files
