the first problem could be solved by rebooting computers on your network ..restart the one that hosts files first ..it could be that you have two names because it has picked up the new name but it still remembers the old one(localhost) ..try restarting and see if both problems will still be there ..

i meant the computer you want to connect to i can assume its linux because of the name "localhost"

to make sure we are on the same level ..let see if we both know what you have ..

you have two computers, one pclinuxos and the other one vista and you want to have them see each other and share files btw them, right? and your vista machine is the one that shows both names, localhost and seko? ..two machines can not have the same ip address and the same machine to have two names means the other system sees the new name but remembers the old one ..

am i also to understand that, when trying to access linux from vista machine, vista asks you for password and then lets you in ..but vista doest allow you to enter it from linux and you can only see its shares or?

your problem isnt very clear to me ..

i dont see why your linux system broadcasts two names ...your system is supposed to broadcast the name you provided on the netbios area ...if that area is left open, then the system will default to broadcast the name of the computer ..you can change the name of the computer by going to pcc -> network and internet -> alter miscellaneous internet settings and then enter "seko" in the host name, click save and restart ..the "localhost" name should be gone now after you restart your computer ..

where do you check the names of your computer(s) ..what name does your vista system broad cast on the network ...can you see your linux box from vista side?

your english is pretty hard to understand  :D :D ..well, english isnt my first language either ...just wondering, whats yours?

ok, the vista machine asks for username and password and allow you to enter it after you provide them when you want to enter it from another windows/vista machine??? but with pclinuxos, you can see the vista machine but you can access it, right? what happens when you try to access it? do you get a permission denied errors or they ask you for username and password and still dont all you in after you provide them?

the localhost doesnt have an ip address anymore ..i think, it time it wil die out ..it could be that its being read from a cache somewhere and it will go away when the cache is refreshed ..i dont think it interfere with anything ..

do you have shares set up on your linux box? you will have to have folders already in a shareble state before a remote system can access them(enter the system)

you seem to be some sort of a system admin .

do you get that error when you try to connect to it through smb4k or through konqueror smb:/ kio slave ..i have seen that error from konqueror's kio slaves and not from smb4k ..

i am from tanzania(east africa) and my first language is swahili ..have you heard of it .. there is a lot of arabic language in swahili ..by definition ..swahili is a mixture of bantu languages of east africa and arabic ...the word swahili is actually arabic in origin ..small world heh .. :D

i just tried to set up a file sharing on winxp with a password and i didnt see an option to that .. is the vista machine you are trying to access on a different domain that requires a user to enter credentials? ...

for your first reply:
yes you was right the localhost is died now  ;D and the only one now is seko ;D
i Will try again to share folders(now the problem of double names is solved :D) and give u the results but tomorrow because all my network users are sleeping now the time is 03:42AM ;)
the error message came from samba shares.
sure i have hared about Tanzania (we are the same Continent then we are Neighbors :D)
nice to know you

for your second reply:
i haven't understand well
the machine is i want to access it is harvard IP:192.168.2.2 it runs at vista
when i access this machine with my vista installed on my machine it asks for user and pass when i enter them i can access and copy files
but when i try to do that with pclinux with samba shares even it don't asks me to enter user or password!!
it display this message:
"The process for the smb://harvard protocol died unexpectedly."

ok, glad your first part is solved ...now, to the second part ..

how do you get this error ?""The process for the smb://harvard protocol died unexpectedly." ..do you get it when you try to access the vista machine using konqueror or using smb4k? ..i have seen that error from konqueror but not from smb4k ..

is your system fully up to date? ..google seems to suggest samba has problems with vista and vista support is improved on samba versions greater than 3.0.24 ..i have samba version 3.0.25b but i am fully up to date ..are you? what version of samba are you running? you can find this out from synaptic
