This describes exactly what I asked about in another very recent post  Annoying problem with Thunderbird. ;D

[Whenever I try to open Thunderbird for a second time during a session I get the message
Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system.
But I can't close it because I can't find it anywhere.]

YouCanToo solved that by explaining how to press Ctrl-Exc to see the running programs and kill Thunderbird.

That fixed that but it also explains why I was getting the shut down problem.

Because Thunderbird was still running without showing up in my Smoothtasks the machine refused to shut down. Solving one problem nicely solved the other. ;D ;D ;D

I would not trust the Geek Squad as far as I can throw them. ;D
