(Solved) synaptic still playing up, not downloading for me.
« on: March 20, 2013, 01:52:45 AM »
I tried to download and install some programs via synaptic. I start synaptic and entered the root password, selected the program(s) I want, ie avidemux. I am told that there is a child with it and it too is selected. I select to download and install the program. After verifying to go ahead, synaptic informs me that two files will be downloaded and installed. I agree to this and the cursor turns into a rotating dumbbell and then synaptic just disappears, no error messages or anything.
I restart it and go through the steps again and the same happens again.
Search the forum, find nothing that matches my error but did as old polack suggested and so I restarted the system. The same result.
Again, using old polack suggestion, start synaptic via konsole. The same thing happened but this time there was this error message left in konsole.

Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_hide: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
warning: cleaning stale lock
Segmentation fault

Could anyone give a clue as to what is going on and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Did you hit reload to refresh the synaptic database & update?

What repository are you using? Only one right?
Is your network connection steady? Another post reported that error from a network disconnect oor timeout.

Why, any 5 year old child could understand this.
Somebody bring me a 5 year old.

Thank you DeBaas. I followed your link and carried out the steps mentioned there. I opened the list file with kwritesu and edited out old repository links and entered the new links. Synaptic now works.
While editing out old links I noticed that one link had a misspelt line in that the word rpm was attached to the last word of the previous line. Perhaps that was the problem all the time?

Me again, sorry to be a pain but how do I put "Solved" onto the original heading? I could do it in a reply but the original posting seems closed for editing. I forgot to thank johnmart for his contribution. I did reload and refresh the database but it did not work :(

Just modify your first post in this thread and add "Solved" to the subject line  ;)
