Need to install PCL from LiveUSB drive (SOLVED)
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:35:32 PM »
I have gone back and read some of the old PCL magazines but still am not sure how I should proceed...

I have never been able to get my PCL system to work again since the KDE upgrade a few weeks ago so I have given up
and wish to reinstall PCL to "/".   In the past, I would have been able to do this from the LiveCD but since that option no longer is available I verified that my BIOS allows me to boot from a USB hard drive and purchased a new 16gb USB drive.

The USB drive is formatted FAT 32 and I have downloaded the ~1.4gb Pclinux-kde 13.02 ISO file to a Win7 system
HD and then copied this file over to my new USB drive.  I think I remember that one has to convert the ISO file before it becomes in usable format but I haven't done so since I don't know how to do this in Win7.

I don't know what to do next since I cannot use the "PClinux Live USB" within Win7.   I still have my LiveCD PClinux 2011.09 KDE
and when running that I see that it gives me the option to run a "Make LiveUSB", however I assume that would use the 2011.09 vs. the latest 13.02 KDE ISO file on my USB that I desire.

Should I reformat the USB drive to Ext3 and then copy the 13.02 ISO to it by running PCL from the old LiveCD?   If so,
which program do I then use to extract the files - is it still KB3 or something like that?

Does anyone see the best path to proceed to build this LiveUSB ?

AMD Athlon 64 3200, 2GB ram,  ~320 GB HD,  Video=ATI Radeon X300 SE (128mb) PCI-e
KDE     Kern  3.2.18-pclos2.a64

I used to think I knew a lot about computers until I started using Linux.  Now I feel my age...

Being biased I suggest you use the PCLOS LiveUSB Creator.

It will give you a choice of sources .....  the LiveCD itself or an ISO on your HDD.

Be aware you need to create at least one partition on the USB stick in Linux format ...  ext2, ext3 or ext 4 recommended.

You could for instance create that partition towards the end of the USB stick, and retain a Win partition for sharing data.

Why not? .....  will the reason influence installing from USB also?

In your case, I think it would be easier to download the windows version of Unetbootin and create your Live USB with it.

BTW have you gone through this article?

And in this article, there is a walkthrough for creating a Live USB with PCLinuxOS LiveUSB Creator while on a live session running from a CD (you can ignore the "persistence" option if you like and follow all other steps):
