KDE 4.10.1 now available
« on: March 18, 2013, 07:11:50 AM »
KDE 4.10.1 is now available in, or on its way to the repo. As with 4.9.5, this upgrade was built from ground up, combining and applying a common setup for both 32bit and 64bit. KDE 4.10 comes with a series of improvements, and 4.10.1 with many bug-fixes.

Note: Due to a change in the KDE 4.10 source code, a patch for QT4 had to be applied to overcome a plasma crash. For this reason, and only after the initial upgrade from 4.9.5 to 4.10.1, you must reboot your PC by opening a root-terminal and enter the command: init 6

This upgrade includes upgraded packages for DigiKam, R-base, Calligra and resolves the plugin-crash for Gwenview.

If you encounter any issues in the upgrade process please post them in this single dedicated topic here, so we can find all issues quickly, fix and upload the updated packages to the repo.

have fun,
-p.

Just to be clear.  Run the update, then open a terminal, su to root, enter "init 6." Exit terminal.  Then reboot.  Correct?

yes, after entering init 6 you will not need to exit the terminal, nor reboot because the command init 6 mens to reboot the system.  ;)

I was wondering... What difference does init 6 make over a regular reboot of the system?

I think I've found something that explains it very well:

My yawp continued untouched after the update.

If you're running KDE, just do a full update and you'll get it, otherwise, look for task-kde4.

On 32 bit it is currently only on PASS server.  ;)

...and also goes on to admit that it no longer applies. Certainly, in my experience reboot shuts down gracefully, closing services properly.

So, why init 6 rather than reboot or shutdown -r now?

It applies to both 32 bit and 64 bit.
The point is that the KDE libraries have been updated and so there is a good chance the "shutdown" widget will not function correctly (until the system is rebooted).
So the instruction is given to reboot the system using command line.
Which command you use is entirely up to you  ;D ;D

Updated, got kde4.10. I noticed the reboot instructions in the install feedback box.
Nice touch.  ;)
Always pays to notice that feedback.  ;D
