Missing dependency?
« on: February 27, 2013, 06:58:08 AM »
While doing an LXDE update using synaptic I got the following message.   Is this a missing dependency?  (I do not use the program anyway!)

Quote
While installing package PCLinuxOS-FLV-Player-3.6-2pclos2013:

Note: As Converter is needed ffmpeg, or avconv.
Please install one of them, too.
************************************************
Hinweis: Als Konverter wird entweder ffmpeg oder
avconv benötigt. Bitte installieren Sie einen.
How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

Hi,

if you do not use this program it is possible to uninstall it.

if you use it you will need ffmpeg or avconv to get full functionality of this program. That's all.

The dependency is not missing they are suggested ;)

I got the message, and decided to go get avconv, which is not in the repo.  So I downloaded the file avconv.zip from sourceforge,
and extracted it, but it looks like a Windows program.  Here's what the extraction produced:
inflating: setup.exe                                           <-----
  inflating: AVConv_1_0_0_1/AVConv.exe.deploy     <----
  inflating: AVConv_1_0_0_1/AVConv.exe.manifest   <----
  inflating: AVConv_1_0_0_1/avconv.ico.deploy
   creating: AVConv_1_0_0_1/bin/
   creating: AVConv_1_0_0_1/bin/Debug/
  inflating: AVConv_1_0_0_1/bin/Debug/config.xml.deploy
  inflating: AVConv.application
  inflating: AVConv_1_0_0_1.application

So now what?  I see above "if you do not use this program it is possible to uninstall it."
I don't like to dump any kind of media player--sooner or later, something will come along that needs it to play.
I do have ffmpeg, but not all the java stuff that seems to go with it, but synaptic said I would need avconv or As Converter,
which I haven't looked for, except it's not in the repo either.
Please advise.

Installing software outside the repos is strongly discouraged, blah blah blah...

The message from PCLinuxOS-FLV-Player clearly states that you will need either one of the two converters.
FFMPEG is usually included in all standard PCLinuxOS installations (I'm not sure about the Mini ones).
So if you have ffmpeg, you need nothing more...

I'm pretty sure the Avconv version you downloaded was indeed a Windows version.
You have installed it in your system through WINE.
So it won't be used by the player in any way, I think you should uninstall it.
For the whole world, you are someone.
For someone, you are the whole world.

OK, thanx, folks. The Windows stuff is gone, and the libav is installed. Is it a bug that a program installed by synaptic requires a dependency not in the repos?

 ??? What you mean?

I wouldn't make here PCLinuxOS-FLVPlayer dependency on a encoder tool. The first of this prog is to display video stuff, like from youtube, and other web sites.
The encoder stuffs comes later to this tool, and i like to have free hand to install my favorite encoder...

What I mean, Daniel, is that I installed the FLV player, which is in the repo, and got the message: please install As Converter  or avconv. These files are not
(specifically) in the repos, altho one of the replies says that avconv is part of libav. I don't know how you're supposed to know that. I think that's probably
a bug.
