Too many questions crossing over!

George, you need More applications->Configuration->Configure your Desktop. Then look for System Administration->QT Graphics System.

Is the openGL driver being worked on?

I too, have lost my main desktop effects - cube, wobbly windows, cover switch. (Wobbly Windows were unusable on 4.9.2, but tried to work)

I was hoping for an improvement, but no.

Right click on the desktop
select Desktop Settings
Unlock Widgets
Change the layout from Default desktop to Folder View
Lock Widgets
Click OK

Unfortunately, I do not have the "desktop settings" voice...   :(
The right click menu starts with "Command..."

Thank you for your answer...

Mauro

Hold down the ALT key and press D and then S, does this bring up the settings?

Nope... it brings up the desktop configuration (that is, the very last voice of the right click menu)

Mauro

That's precisely what 7272andy meant. Configuration=Settings.

And there your very first choice is a choice of layout. What you want appears to be a "Folder view" layout, the third from the top on the popup list.

I think a picture is worth hundred words... This is the right click menu on my "broken system" (sorry, the voices are in italian, but you get the idea)

On the other hand, this is the same menu on my laptop

As you can see, the "Create", "Paste", "Icons" voices are missing. In particular, I cannot create any object in the Desktop...

Kmail has been pulled back in, although I don't want it anywhere near my system. Attempts to remove it want to remove all the other PIM applications, including Kalarm, which I do use.

Hi!

I'll post here too my issue.

It's a foolish thing, but I don't know how to handle it since I don't know how to work in text mode... Huh
So, please don't laugh!...

Upgraded to KDE 4.10, typed in terminal init 6 to reboot.
After reboot it went in text mode

PCLinuxOS release...
Kernel.....
localhost login:_

What should I type there??? Huh
Mmmghhhh!!!...

The same thing in my 32 bit install after upgrading to (testing) kernel 3.4.

I tried root->password
(root@localhost ^)#_startx

Is shows a large list ended with
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error

I need a hand, please...
Thanks.
Hi Ika,
Did you folow the advice offered on the other thread?  :)

Yes, johnmart. No results...
I think I'll give a re-installation am
nd reboot in graphical mode, not thru terminal.
Anyway, as I posted in another thread, the 3D graphic don't work in my HP laptop.Don't know what to do...

You only get
Quote
Icone
Aggiorna desktop
Apri con Dolphin

if Folder View is already set.

You have to click "Impostazioni di Desktop predefinito" and change "Desktop predefinito" (= "Default Desktop") to "Vista delle cartelle" (= "Folder View").

I also noticed some of my widgets had moved a couple of millimetres and were overlapping. No problem, I thought, I'll just unlock widgets and resize and move them until they're neat.

KDE has other ideas. I can unlock the widgets and move them, but as soon as the mouse is no longer over them they move back to where they were before. I can't lay them out the way I want. KDE forces an ugly layout.

I'm beginning to lose patience with KDE. They seem to be too interested in playing with their own ideas to realise users need stability. Every time they upgrade they break something and they just don't seem to care.

Why can't they get it right? Just a little more care and polish and they'd be there, but they just won't put that extra effort in.  ???

Next time the mirror you use synchronises. If impatient, change to another mirror.

My widget problem - seems they're scared to go too close to the edge, forcing about 20 pixels of wasted space round the screen edges. What's the matter? Afraid of falling off?

widgets move into rhe visible area

i don't think is is 20 pixels

it also depends on the widget and the desktop theme that males more visible the differences

Not sure what you mean, T6. My whole screen is visible. This is new behaviour and very annoying. Surely it's up to me how I use the space on my screen.

I've raised a question on the KDE forum to see whether there's an answer. Some of the blogs suggest KDE 4.11 will be even more restrictive about where widgets can be placed, imposing a grid, so they need to know it isn't acceptable to dictate like this. It's why we left MS, after all.
