HP Pavilion dv7 - graphics problems
« on: March 05, 2013, 10:03:55 AM »
Hi all!

I performed the 64 bit RC1 installation (alongside Windows 7).
Is a laptop HP Pavilion dv7 17”
Intel processor i5 480M 2,66 GHz
4 GB RAM DDR3
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 6650, 1 GB DDR3

Well... I have some problems:
1. The desktop effects. Doesn’t work. I enabled some of them - the cube too ;D . None of them are working! It appears a message saying something like “18 effects can’t be enabled.”
This happens in root and also in the user accounts.
I don’t know if it might be something related with the graphic card... It’s strange because is not an old one...
2. The sound. It’s a bit low. Even Kmix set at the highest level, the sound seems to be just about 50%.

I find it  bit strange because the machine isn't an old one, bought it 2 years ago.
So, I gave it a try with the 32 bit versin. The same issue!
More, Just to test the machine to find out if might be a hardware problem, I tried two distros - Sabayon and the cousin Mageia ( ;D ). The graphics works fine.
So, I suspect some driver(s) missing, but I don't know which one(s).
If needed something from the testing repo I'm ready to use it; just teach me how to open/enable it.
Any help is grateful welcomed.
Thanks.
Paul..

Click the Advanced tab. Try a different Compositing type: to see if that helps.

yes, from opengl set xrender

not sure if you are using the right driver for your video card, it should be used the amd driver available

O_P

I tried this several times and it helps not.
I also enterd in Configure yor Computer->Hardware->Conf. video card. It says something about the availability of a prprietary driver and if I want to install it -> Yes ->...Nothing!

Happens to me every time I set up a new user or redo my KDE configuration.

Just log out and back in, then the effects are activated.

Nope, tschommer!

In fact almost nothing works well...
And the CPUs are running at 100% with 1+ gb memory!!!
Well, I like fried potatos. eggs an bacon, but not cooked over my laptop!...
 ;D ;D ;D

So, I installed the 2102.12 32 bit. Yes, 2012.12! Seems it's working a bit better 270 mb ram) than 2013.02 - 500+ mb ram.

Well..., I'll try reinstall the RC1... :(

I have the same (or very, very similar) HP laptop.

To get all effects working I go through the following routine -- it works every time!
1. Open "Configure your Desktop"
2. Go to Desktop Effects
3. Select "Advanced" tab
4. Change "Compositing Type" to XRender
5. Click "apply" and then "accept configuration"
6. Once again change the "Compositing Type" but this time back to OpenGL
7. Click "apply" and then "accept configuration"
There, you're good to go -- it now accepts all the delightful and stunning effects listed under the "all effects" tab

Thank you for your answer. I did this at least a dozen of time. If it would worked never would I opened this topic.
Iclusive changed Raster-Native, log out and in, rebooting... More, many fresh installations 64 RC1, 32 bits 2012.02/08/12, 2013/02 both Full and MiniMe.
The same problem.
This is what I have:

I click on "Re-enable OpenGL...", no answer and the window freezes. No "Aply" option. Have to close the window and reopen but not all times the change is made untill loging out and in again.
Still no effects...

I don't know if is missing the adequate graphic driver, or needed a newest kernel, or both...
 ??? ??? ???

If I'd know how to open the Testing repo... Maybe will find something helpful inthere.
I'd like to try at least with newer kernel...
