64-Bit problems
« on: March 14, 2013, 07:06:48 PM »
I have just burned and thrown away four copies of the 64-bit RC1.  The reason I am telling you it to merely do an FYI

I downloaded the first copy of the 64-bit iso file, via Torrent using Ktorrent off the PCLinuxOS website,  and burned it to a DVD with K3b (with burner #1).  It got to the 96% point and K3b froze

I deleted the file, downloaded another copy, via Torrent using Ktorrent off the PCLinuxOS website, and burned it to a DVD with K3b (with burner #2).  It got to the 94% point and froze

I downloaded a copy of the file from "Ireland 1" via http, burned it to a DVD with K3b.  It got to 95% froze.

I copied the file from "Ireland 1" to my other computer and burned a copy to a DVD with K3b.  It got to the 96% point and froze.

On all files, the checksum was good, but all caused K3b to error out because of a read error.

Needless to say, I am waiting for the final product before I invest another DVD in the process.

Thought you might want to know.

Deb

i would like to ban k3b from our distro but people loves it

please try with brasero or stop burning discs, since this is a rc1 and follow docnascar suggestion and use liveusb creator

You could also use a read/write dvd.
But LiveUSB is tops for me. If your computer will boot it.

Thanks to all.

I am downloading another copy, via Torrent, but it will take a couple of hours before its done.  So it will be tomorrow evening before I get a chance to write the .iso to the usb stick and create the live usb stick.

Will let you know what happens from that point, tomorrow.

use one of the downloaded ones and check md5, if it is ok, save internet connection and jump to the liveusb step

you don't have to download that iso 5 times because k3b refused to do things well, as it have done for so many users in the recent months, or for me since 2010

ALL the Md5's have been correct.  That is what makes it so weird.

As for the USB, I have it created, but my backup computer will not boot off a USB (which is the problem having something that needs a USB to load).  So, I will have to wait until tomorrow (its midnight and I am headed to bed).  I will let you know how it turns out.

Have you actually tried to boot from any of the "reject" disks?

+1

This phenomenon has been reported on the forum previously, and, IIRC, the disks were good and bootable, despite K3b apparently stopping after 96%.

yep. I was one of the ones that reported that issue a while ago. I'd try K3b again and see if the disc works.

If the MD5 sum is correct it's highly likely the file is OK. Your problem is either K3B or a disk brand that doesn't work well with K3B. Try another brand of disk.

Do an md5sum on the burned disk and compare it with the md5sum of the ISO  ;)

The checksum of the first disk I burned is

305cc2ea94aceda2ad8b7ea10a662cfc

To "Old Polack", yes it will boot, but things are missing, like the anything to tell you you are connected to the internet.  It will connect, but you get no verification and no indication you are connected.  Knowing it was a defective disk, I did not play with it much, except to see it it would, in fact, boot and connect.  It did.

I will shut down this computer in a minute or so and see it I can boot it off the USB stick.

i just did a reboot on the USB stick.  It booted fine, but seemed to have the same missing files that the DVD had.  At least the internet connection did not show connect, or anything, until I went into the CC and looked under Networking and Internet, then Network Connections.

I will play with this some more, but we still have a way to go, or so it seems.

Thanks

Go to Menu->More Applications->Monitoring->NetApplet and click on it.
After that you'll see in the tray.
